You’re right about the miscues on special teams, Moor Fan.
We’ve been practicing on special teams, and we’ve done well on punt and kickoff returns. Our coverage units have been pretty good, too.
Alhambra has had a persistent problem with its long-snapping that dates back to at least the early 2000’s. That’s a tough one to explain.
Our placekicking has been inconsistent so far this season. We have a kicking coach, so I know the guys are working on it.

Special teams problems again. Can’t put that on the players if they don’t practice it. I don’t know if Eric has them practicing special teams but the last two games special teams mistakes have killed Alhambra.

Alhambra’s defense came to play; Montebello’s vaunted offense got to the Moors’ 20-yard line just once the entire first half. The Oilers’ quarterback, Gabriel Tapia, went 0-for-7 in the opening half, and AHS held Montebello to 101 yards from scrimmage.
The Oilers’ nine first-half points were scored because of their defense. Montebello ran only 24 plays on offense in the first half, to 40 for the Moors.
What did Alhambra in was the offense’s inability to execute in the “red zone.” The Moors had a 30-yard field-goal attempt blocked in the first quarter, and then drove the ball to the Oilers’ 2 twice in the second quarter, only to fumble it away both times.
There was nothing wrong with Alhambra’s game plan against Montebello. The players have to execute, and I believe they know that.
The missed opportunities took a toll on us.
In the third quarter, after Alhambra closed the gap to 9-6, the Montebello coaches went to their “ground-and-pound” game to take full advantage of their size and superior roster depth. (Check the Oilers’ roster on MaxPreps if you want to get the full picture.)
Montebello drove for three touchdowns on drives measuring 80, 67, and 77 yards. The Oilers controlled the ball effectively, running 38 plays in the second half, to just 20 for the Moors.
We plan to rebound with a win over San Gabriel this coming Friday, and then it will be up to us to beat Bell Gardens at home the following week. That game will probably decide whether Alhambra returns to the playoffs this year.
There’s still something on the line for us.
