Nick Lemas has guided the Apaches into the Tournament Final
(Arcadia) – Erik Trask threw six scoreless innings and allowed just one hit to lead Arcadia to a 9-0 shutout of La Salle Wednesday night to advance to the championship game of the Apache Tournament.
Trask struck out 7 and walked 2 and allowed only a single to left by pinch hitter Garry Goebel to lead off the sixth. Trask walked a batter to begin the second inning but then retired the next 12 batters in a row before Goebel’s base hit.
“To have a sophomore come in and throw like that was great. It gave us a lot of momentum,” said Arcadia Coach Nick Lemas. “We only get to play two times a week during league but in the tournament we really needed another pitcher and he stepped up.”
Arcadia got all the runs it needed in the second inning. Jonathan Tom singled to left and Trask reached on an error. David Dominguez’ then bunted one towards the mound but the ball was thrown away. Tom scored and Trask took third. Trask then scored on a ground ball by Tyler Dominguez.
The Apaches added 4 more runs in the third on hits by Jonathan Larson, Garrett Tuck, Brandon Benson and Tom. Trask hit a sacrifice fly to drive in a run and David Dominguez had an RBI single.
Meanwhile Trask was sailing along not even allowing the Lancers a base runner. In the sixth, the Apaches added three more. Justin Lew led off with a pinch single and Larson doubled him home. Tuck, Benson and Tom then knocked consecutive singles for two more runs.
Darren Kerfoot came on in the seventh and after allowing a lead off single, retired three consecutive batters to finish it off.
Arcadia knocked off San Dimas and California prior to the win over La Salle to earn a trip to the Championship game. The Apaches will face Glendora who beat University and St. Francis and tied Temple City.
Arcadia will start junior K.J. Edson against the Tartans. Game time is set for Thursday night at 7:00 PM.
