It’s a Bonita Air Assault in Opener

Sean Jastrab threw four TD passes to lead Bonita to the rout.

By Tim Peterson

(La Verne) – Bonita jumped on Arroyo in the first quarter, landed the knockout punch in the second and cruised the rest of the way in a 42-7 rout of the Knights Friday night at Bonita.

It was 42-0 at halftime before Bonita head coach Steve Bogan called off the dogs in the second half. Sean Jastrab threw four touchdown passes, two of them to Ethan Durham for 30 and 23 yards. He also connected with Jacob Horne for a pair of scores for 29 and 52 yards.

It got away from Arroyo early. On the Knights first possession a bad snap sailed over the head of the punter setting up Bonita at the Arroyo 28. Three plays later Jastrab hit Durham for a 30-yard score and the Bearcats were off and running.

On their next possession Jastrab hooked up with AJ Moreno for a 26-yard touchdown to make it 14-0. Arroyo proceeded to march down to the Bonita 12 yard line on the next series but Brandon Stone intercepted Knight quarterback Andrew Enriquez and returned it to the Arroyo 47. Jastrab wasted no time finding Durham on a 23-yard swing pass who eluded a defender and bolted into the endzone early in the second quarter.

As the Arroyo offense continued to struggle, the next two series were Jastrab strikes to Horne. The last score came with 4:51 left in the first half when Elijah Maldonado busted thorough the Arroyo line for a 48-yard TD scamper to make it 42-0.

The Bearcats took that lead into the half and it was game, set, match.

Bogan emptied his bench in the fourth quarter. The Knights did manage a score when Enriquez hit Carlos Hernandez on a 14-yard touchdown pass with 2:44 left in the third.

Jastrab threw for 220 yards and the four touchdowns and Horne had three catches for 86 yards and two scores. Durham had six receptions for 85 yards and two TDs.

Enriquez and the Knights were hurt by turnovers. They had five in all including three interceptions.

The Knights will to get on track next week when they host Nogales. Bonita will travel to Diamond Bar.

    Kind of proves what you said Peterson about scrimmages don’t mean much. Arroyo looked good in their scrimmage against El Rancho and El Rancho looked sorta weak and small. Pads come on for real and Arroyo gets smoked badly and El Rancho takes one of the highest ranked teams in the area to the last minute.

    Losing is one thing, getting smacked and the dawgs called off them at “halftime” is another.

    @Peterson,
    So much for Arroyo losing by a touchdown! #Homer
