(Rosemead) – Rosemead quarterback Ivan Ostry has transferred to La Canada Rosemead head coach Matt Castaneda confirmed Friday.
EMUSDH has canceled Fall sports for the 2020-’21 school year which left Ostry with no place to play. Then La Canada came into the picture.
“He has family there and it seemed like the best fit for him. We talked it over and we’re all on the same page, “Castaneda said. “He’s a senior so it makes sense. I hope he has a great year and everything works out for him.”
In 2019 Ostry threw for 1166 yards and 16 touchdowns rushed for 2,284 yards and 28 touchdowns. Ostry, who did it all for the Panthers, also had 67 total tackles, (34 solo) on the defensive side of the ball.
Ostry now will bring all of that to La Canada for what he hopes will be a big senior year.
Many other districts are in the same situation but those districts were willing to find a way not make excuses and kill any seniors final chance to ball. If I’m an underclassmen I’m outta there ASAP, they don’t care about y’all.
I think pushing football late and messing up another season for spring is more unfair. By having football this late you kill track baseball and othwr spring sports. They all lost a season last year. Emuhsd only canceled fall sports. Most the teams in emuhsd share athletes. Having football kills another track and baseball season. So making the for the kids arguments falls on Def ears when it more then likely screws other kids even more. It’s a tough call and sucks but there will be emuhsd sports before the end just not ones maybe you guys want to see.
Singiser was heavily against football being played this year too.
EMUSD majorly pulled the rug out under all these kids, but in what could’ve helped the already struggling business community(via Covid). EMUSD is presently home of Cal.State Champs and Rosemead H.S team momentum would’ve had them contending again this year, even with the limited attendance(social distancing), there’s still monetary generation, concessions, school swag purchases at local businesses and especially a sense of normality, the schoolboards hasty decision and its obtuse position would lead some to believe possibly they might or may have applied for state or federal relief aid behind this pandemic, I guess more for them out ways something (even a little) for the local community and its residence…POLITICS AT WORK…smh
Is his brother Nick joining him? He’s no slouch himself. They will shake things up in that league.
Gabrielino High is the best school academically and has the best facilities in the Mission Valley League hands down.
Gabrielino is having a football season. Heard some local kids from the almont league might be transferring in.
Old grumpy is not the superintend, I believe he is the youngest superintend it in Southern California. I think it is the wrong decision and I believe there are going to be repercussions like losing students to surrounding schools that have football. C’mon Eddie pull your head out and let the kids play.
So is Gabrielino the only team in the MVL allowed to play this season? Can we get a schedule of their games.
Wherever Ostry plays let it be known to those in attendance, that If he’s in play (no matter what side of the ball) “Don’t blink and have that camera phone ready”….lol….truth !!
Are they playing games? He also is a 2x CIF Placer in wrestling. They have a solid program.
I applaud him for doing whatever it takes to get some football in. The powers that be and old grumpy dudes behind this cancellation really screwed the kids in EMUSD.
Good for him! I saw the kid play last year and it would be waste for him not to play this year. The MVL pulled the plug to early on these kids and now will lose them as they transfer.
