(Covina) – West Covina’s defense pitched a shutout and the offense did the rest in a 26-0 win over South Hills Saturday night at Covina District Field. With the rivalry victory the Bulldogs can proclaim the title of the Kings of Cameron for 2021.
West Covina outscored the Huskies 13-0 in each half for the 26 point victory. The Bulldogs scored quickly on their first possession using just four plays to go 85 yards. Zach Requena broke loose for a 45-yard touchdown run.
South Hills was forced to punt on its next possession but West Covina muffed the catch and South Hills recovered. The Huskies then drove all they way down to the West Covina 20 yard line but were stopped on fourth down.
The Bulldogs used a little trickery on the next series. On fourth down they set up in punt formation on their own 21 yard line. But instead of booting it away Deven Muniz faked it and took off. 79 yards later he was crossing the goal line for a 79-yard touchdown for a 13-0 lead with 4:48 left in the second quarter.
West Covina had one more opportunity to score before the end of the first half but Steven De Luna was intercepted by Jayden Montenegro near the South Hills goal line.
A long kickoff return and a penalty set up West Covina at the South Hills 30 to open the third quarter. Five plays later Aaron Ramiro plunged in from two yards out to make it 20-0.
While the Huskies offense continued to struggle with two turnovers and a fumble the Bulldogs tacked on one more score in the fourth quarter. Muniz picked up his second touchdown of the night when he got behind the South Hills secondary, hauled in a pass from De Luna in stride and went 75 yards to glory.

West Covina recovered a South Hills fumble in Bulldog territory on the next series and was able to maintain possession and run out the clock to secure the victory.
Requena led the West Co running attack with 121 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. De Luna threw only five passes but completed two of them for 97 yards including the big 75-yard strike to Muniz.
For South Hills Gary San angelo had eight carries for 46 yards and hauled in seven receptions for 63 yards. Joseph Rivera rushed for 75 yards on nine carries. Rivera also threw an interception and South Hills had two turnovers on the night.
South Hills is still in search for it first win falling to 0-6. West Covina improved to 3-4 and for the next year are the “Kings of Cameron”.
Good to see the Bulldogs on the upswing
Aren’t there only two schools on this street?
An ideal place for a good coach to come in and resurrect a dead program. If not Maggiore is going to suck up all South Hills talent and they will end up like Wilson,Duarte,Nogales etc.
I wonder if SH could beat Sierra Vista or Azusa with that team. Sad. They were steam rolling all the good local teams just a few years ago.
