The Peterson Principle – Undefeated Update: 10/19/2021

By Tim Peterson

With St. Paul and San Gabriel being knocked off last week that leaves seven local teams still unbeaten. I did have both of those teams losing but although I had St. Paul losing to St. Francis last week, I thought San Gabriel would last until Week Ten before falling to Schurr. It happened a couple of weeks early when Bell Gardens turned the trick. Here’s how the other seven stack up.

Monrovia (8-0) – I said it last week and it’s worth repeating. The Wildcats are going undefeated. The only question is whether or not they drop 60 again in their last two games. My guess is yes.

Arroyo (8-0) – The Knights secured an undefeated season Friday night with a rout of Rosemead. If they lose to either Gabrielino or Mt. View in the last two weeks there should be an investigation.

Glendora (8-0) – The Tartans will roll over Los Osos and South Hills to close out an unbeaten year. It won’t be close.

El Rancho (9-0) – It’s been a great run for the Dons. It may be even better in the playoffs. But La Serna spoils the undefeated year Friday night in the last regular season game.

Warren (7-0) – The Bears are going to get it done. They’ll hammer Gahr Friday night and hold off Downey in Week Ten to  finish off a perfect regular season.

Mayfair (7-0) – The Monsoons will go undefeated. If there’s a chance that they will lose to either Norwalk or Bellflower then there’s also a chance that I’ll be a starting linebacker for the Green Bay Packers.

Baldwin Park (8-0) – The Braves routed Wilson last week and will win out to go unbeaten. Montclair, their next opponent is 5-3, and although it may be close BP wins. The Braves work Workman in the season finale.

That’s my principle.

@ Bottom Line: Aha! That would’ve been a plausible reason for getting excited, except for the likelihood that we’d get slapped with a lawsuit for trademark infringement. The NFL must own the rights to the very words, “Super Bowl.” Registered trademark and all that.

I hear this year’s Superbowl will be between the top two Almont teams. Now it’s clear why Vrooman is so pumped over the Moors’ prospects going forward.

Stat Man: We’ve had some pretty interesting discussions concerning Alhambra’s difficulties so far this season, but, after we beat Montebello last week, a win against San Gabriel puts us in position to make the playoffs.
I’ve always been optimistic about the capacity of this Alhambra team to improve during the course of the 2021 season. Being candid about the challenges we’ve faced is not the same thing as making excuses.
It might surprise some people that we’re actually contending for a playoff spot going into the fourth week of league play. That’s not too bad for the moment, but we’ll see what kind of position we’re in after our showdown with San Gabriel on Friday night.

In the last real season we had 6 perfect season teams. Alhambra-El Monte-Cresenta Valley-Sierra Vista. These teams were 10-0. Next full season Sierra Vista declines to play because they don’t want to. El Monte football is blaming it’s demise on either the former head coaches temper tantrum or malfeasence by the administration. La Cresenta has chosen not to comment on their demise while Alhambra folks have commented ad naseum as to their excuses. Point being when you have a team that puts back to back good seasons be happy. The fall is right around the corner. Thus 2019 perfectos Ayala-La Serna are sure doing something right.
