Game Night: Week Nine

The Del Rio League title is on the line when Anthony Bonilla and El Rancho take on La Serna Friday night. (Photo by Duane Barker).

All kickoffs are at 7:00 p.m. unless otherwise indicated:

Thursday October 21

Diamond Ranch (1-7) at Los Altos (1-7)

In a four team Valle Vista League this game is a must win both teams. A loss means you’re 0-2 with virtually no shot at the playoffs. Both teams have had forgettable seasons. A win here will make it a little brighter. Both teams have lost seven straight after winning their openers but they’ve both had their moments. Los Altos lost to undefeated Monrovia by only three points. Diamond Ranch led St. Paul at halftime before stumbling in the second half. It could come down to a kick in the fourth quarter. The Conquerors salvage the win.

Los Altos 20 Diamond Ranch 17

Friday October 22

Schurr (5-3) at Montebello (1-7)

This game is always entertaining with only a nine iron separating the two schools. It’s been a struggle all year for Montebello while Schurr has won four of its last five. The Spartans also have their eye on an Almont League title. This is a Schurr thing. Spartans in a rout.

Schurr 35 Montebello 10

Alhambra (3-5) at San Gabriel (7-1)

Everything changed with Bell Gardens’ rout of San Gabriel last week. It left the Almont wide open with all four of the top teams in play. Will San Gabriel bounce back from that big loss to BG or will Alhambra use the momentum from last week’s win over Montebello to beat the Mats and stay in the race? The Matadors should rebound from a bad night. Alhambra’s defense has had trouble making stops all year. San Gabriel comes out early, makes a statement and never looks back.

San Gabriel 42 Alhambra 17

La Serna (6-2) at El Rancho (9-0)

This is the game of the week. It’s been the hot topic of conversation on the MVS boards for the last two months. El Rancho is undefeated while La Serna’s two losses are to teams, Bonita and Warren, that have a combined record of 14-1. The Lancers have a couple of impressive wins as well including a victory over Culver City three weeks ago. One or two big plays will decide this game. A turnover could be the difference. La Serna has enough and holds off the Dons in the end to secure the Del Rio League title.

La Serna 31 El Rancho 27

Bonita (7-1) at Ayala (7-1)

The Mountain West title is at stake here. Again in a four team league when each team is 1-0 this one is crucial. Ayala has only lost to unbeaten Glendora while Bonita lost by four points to a 7-1 Downey team. Another game that could come down to a key turnover late in the game. The Bearcats come up with a big play and a big win at the end.

Bonita 24 Ayala 17

Northview (3-5) at San Dimas (6-2)

Northview beat Diamond Ranch last week to get off on the right foot in the Valle Vista. San Dimas took care of Los Altos last week in what turned out to be a one-score game. The question here is can the Vikings stop the run? If they can’t it will be long night for Northview in San Dimas. The Saints will continue to pound it until they break through. Too much ground and pound for the Vikes. Saints run their way to a win.

San Dimas 34 Northview 14

Burroughs (3-4) at Muir (6-1)

Burroughs is coming off a tough Pacific League loss to Crescenta Valley. Word on the street early was that Muir was down and wouldn’t compete in the Pacific. Well here we are eight weeks later and the Mustangs are 6-1 overall and 3-0 in league. The Stangs only loss was to a 6-1 St. Francis team. Muir is looking forward to the “Turkey Tussle” next week with league leader Pasadena. Mustangs in a rout.

Muir 35 Burroughs 7

Arcadia (3-4) at Pasadena (6-2)

If you’re going to the game go ahead and make dinner plans as well. You’ll be out of there early. Pasadena will score early, late and often. This one will be over by halftime. The Bulldogs are tuning up for the Tussle as well next week with Muir at the Rose Bowl.

Pasadena 49 Arcadia 7

so he’s not a transfer in your book but he technically did transfer from SP to LS back to SP then ended up at ER…. seems like ER ended up being last resort…. but hey playing the Don Lugos and Sierra Vistas.. Covinas .. of course his stats are going to be what they are LOL
@AreaDad yeah thats the way this thing works for private, thats why kids go to LS or go come back because they have the opportunity to win league year in and year out and play 14 games .. remember its “WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR ME LATELY”

This has been one of the most anticipated games all year on these boards. Why? Cal Preps computer picks La Serna by 7 and the WDN picked El Rancho. When was the last time anybody picked a Del Rio team to beat La Serna even as a joke. That’s like picking the Generals over the Globe Trotters. Le Serna dominated Tesoro and Culver City. El Rancho dominated Sierra Vista and Baldwin Park. My pick 42-6 La Serna. Running clock 4th quarter.

    lets get some facts straight.
    1. yes I am a ER cheerleader ( Proud of it) CHEER DAD
    2. IF you think Mitchell left SP bc he couldn’t compete… ROFL… LOL… ROFL… let the numbers speak for itself, Mitchell is winning by a long shot!
    3. um… HE IS A PICO kid, I do not consider him a transfer bc he should have never gone to SP to begin with…. SP steals our kids every year… for what? show me ONE KID who went to SP and ACTUALLY benefited??? ACTUALLY got everything he and the family was promised… ONE KID .. ill wait.
    4. FYI, Mitchell is not the only kid we SAVED from SP… this team is HOMEGROWN and Glimpse of how good ER can be if they kept all the PR Dons HOME… STAY DONS .

MHS is definitely down this year. It’s ok though. No crying from my Alma Mater. We will just rebuild. As for your rumor mill, keep listening to them. I’m not sure if you know the coaches but they don’t care one bit about opinions. That’s just my take on it. Btw, it’s been a long time since you’ve been able to put MHS down. Go right ahead ! It’s hard to see other teams being relevant in the Almont especially when my school has dominated it over the last 10 years. Have fun clown…

Any clown that brings up JV scores especially from the last 2 years is a bonfide moron. In 2018 when these ER boys were freshmen they lost to Cal 35-0
And to Whittier 42-0, and we saw the result the last few weeks, it’s all about developing your players, this isn’t a 1 year program. It’s all about developing whoever shows up at your door. Anyone can win freshmen year by going out to LM, LH and Whittier and hand picking players. Hope your all star team don’t choke tomorrow night against ER’s small fat, injury ridden team.

    @TranferSzn,
Here’s the difference. St Paul goes shopping for good players to replace players that have been loyal since their freshman yr. They Don’t invest their time in making them good.

El Rancho will invest the time and create good players. They encourage them to believe in themselves and bring out the absolute best of their players. They aren’t world beaters but they definitely give it their all and are competitive

@the ranch 18. You’re just a male cheerleader trying to hype up nothing. ER will take the loss like the JV game. I don’t think they scored a point. The gap only getting bigger. You will choke like the dodgers. I think LS lives in ur head rent free? When’s the last time ER beat them ?

Why would you stay at a school where they are actively shopping for your replacement? pico kids to go to St Paul to sponsors the kids who actually get scholarships. Did SP not go out shopping for a QB from NorCal? Mitchell’s numbers are far better and it’s not like SP had played anyone until they played St Francis….

Schurr vs Montebello is not talked about because the oily Pete had lead his team to an amazing 1 win season!
They don’t have nothing to talk about down in Oilerville. Oily Pete & Son have really coached their behinds off this season with no recruits, no QB and all MHS kids.

Then on Friday, I’ll be taking a break from the MVL I’ll be at the Game of the week!
La Serna vs El Rancho. This one should be a fun one.
