Game Night: CIF Playoffs-Semi Finals

Owen Long and La Serna have a huge semi final game against St. Francis. (Photo by Duane Barker).

All kickoffs are at 7:00 p.m. unless otherwise indicated:

Friday November 19

DIV 2

Lutheran/ Orange (8-4) at Sierra Canyon (7-4)

Tough matchup for Sierra Canyon. Orange Lutheran is coming off a 38-14 win over Corona del Mar. The Trailblazers blew out Vista Murrieta 48-23. Both teams can score but Sierra Canyon will score more.

Sierra Canyon 42 Lutheran/Orange 28

DIV 4

La Serna (10-2) at St. Francis (9-2)

Best game of the weekend. La Serna is coming off a last second win over Lawndale and has won 10 straight games. St. Francis knocked off a tough Chaparral team by two touchdowns on the road. It should be decided late and possibly some last second heroics. Home field should be enough for the Golden Knights. They advance to the finals.

St. Francis 35 La Serna 31

DIV 7

Pasadena (9-2) at Aquinas (7-5)

Aquinas held off Leuzinger by one point while Pasadena rolled over La Mirada. Aquinas is a solid program and will come to play. But at this point can anybody stop the Dena-Train? Bulldogs to the finals.

Pasadena 38 Aquinas 28

DIV 10

Northview (6-6) at Palmdale (8-3)

Palmdale comes at you in waves. The Falcons turned a close game into a rout in 23 seconds last Saturday night against Covina. Great win for Northview over Kaiser. Marcel Perez’ defense completely shut down the Cats explosive running attack. He’ll need that kind of effort again from his troops and for the most part he’ll get. But on the road against a team like Palmdale is a little to much to ask. Falcons hold on to win.

Palmdale 31 Northview 24

DIV 13

South Pasadena (7-5) at Montclair (8-4)

Nice run for so far South Pasadena. Both teams are coming off big wins. Montclair blew out San Gabriel while South Pasadena beat up on Western Christian. On paper it looks like two evenly matched teams. The Tigers hang in until the end but Montclair wins at home.

Montclair 27 South Pasadena 24

DIV 14

Loara (6-6) at Alhambra (6-6)

Alhambra got a break at the end of the regular season with not only a winning coin flip but also being placed in Division 14. The Moors are right where they want to be and look to be primed for a championship run. Alhambra advances.

Alhambra 30 Loara 27

I read they are building affordable condos on La Serna Ave so their recruits won’t have to ride the Montebello bus every day.

You all have no evidence of any recruiting going on at La Serna and sound like a bunch of jealous toddlers throwing tantrums.

Come by sometime and asks the kids themselves if anyone recruited them to come to La Serna. We got academics and a consistently winning football program.

And before you start spouting off how we lose to private schools just ask yourself how your program would fair against those schools? Spoiler alert, you guys would be running clocked by the end of the first quarter.

Sit down and think about what excuses you can come up with for next year when you lose in league.

Um ok let’s just throw a smoke screen out and talk about the overall record the last 10 years and completely ignore everything your program gets away with in that district. You are either blind or just don’t want to acknowledge what is happening.

That’s what happens when you play teams who beat you at your recruiting game, lost to St Paul, now the story repeats itself with st Francis. Let me guess, another 100 friendly hills natives will land at your door next summer?

Delusional La Serna fan. Let’s just turn a blind eye to all our players who should be at other schools. It feels better to say we built our program with all “Friendly Hills” kids.

    @Anonymous,

Um, you guys did have the QB from El Rancho. You guys literally have the majority of the players from the La Mirada pop warner team that played on national tv a couple of years ago.

QB Jake Long 2000 yards passing 18 TD only 5 pics
    RB Owen Long 14 TD
Best Defensive Player Del Rio Max Dressen
    OLine Warrior JJ Martinez
All World 6feet 5 inch D Lineman Jackson Ivey

    All live in LS District!

I can go on and on. DELETED YOU Anonymous or should I say sad pathetic CAL Parent or coach. ALL TEAMS IN DEL RIO ARE DOORMATS COMPARED TO LS. I 💯 agree LS should be moved out of the Del Rio. The other teams are completely embarrassing and getting worse. Your only shot at the title was El Rancho this year….ENOUGH SAID ON THAT!!! It does not matter what happens tonight against St Francis. This is been a magical year for LS football. Only 4 seniors are contributing to the success of this 11 game winning streak. Taking teams out like Orange and Lawndale were epic wins for the program.

That Jake Long to Jake George TD with 30 seconds left against Lawndale just proves the high level of talent and coaching at LS. Not many quarterbacks can make that throw and no receivers but #7 can make that catch.

Haters will always hate. Jealousy sucks!

    I’m out!

@Area and Anonymous( 3:34 pm), wow all i can say is you guys need to check yourself!! These Lancers play hard and with heart and they believe in each other.. it’s been that way since 2010 in that span LS is 118 and 30. As long as the PLAYERS believe in the Program it will continue to Win!! So tired of people telling us who we are, like they really know!!! If you want to be part of something real, get on board if not just stand down and stop belittling
kids who do it right. now you can come back with whatever but we have a ballgame to try and win
    so have a nice life.

LS line smaller than El Rancho? What planet are you living on? I hate El ranch and even I could tell you that is absolutely false. Are we going to act like LS isn’t built up of all stars from the entire Whittier union high school district. You didn’t get Vance because you had a good backfield already and he wasn’t going to wait. LS did have the El Rancho Qb during his freshmen year, not sure why he left. LS not have depth? You have like 150 kids in the entire program the others school have half that. Why don’t you just own it, good job LS for what you’re doing but clearly you have every advantage over most of the programs in the area and Del Rio League because the Whittier union district allows it to be that way. The only way the other schools can compete is to go out and somehow hand pick an all star team of their own.

If LS is recruiting outside of the Whittier area then why is their OL and DL smaller than Cal and El Rancho? Why don’t they have depth at every position? No one at LS hand picks anyone from anywhere. If that were the case why wouldn’t we get Vance Johnson, some OL from Cal, or even #54 or the QB from El Rancho? You guys are really reaching.

We built up a program and haven’t looked back since 2010 after having a 2-8 season in 09.

Don’t get mad y’all, get better.

I commend what LS has been able to do, but let’s not act like that isn’t an all star team composed of all the best kids from Whittier, and hand picked kids from La Habra, La Mirada, Norwalk, Santa Fe springs and even Pico Rivera. LS acting like an underdog is comical.

Ok Maverick, let’s not get to carried away with the “recruiting vs coaching”.
If La Serna had to rely on only kids that are supposed to be going there they would be the Del Rio doormat. They get quite enough kids from out of district, that should be going to other schools to make that point a bit ridiculous to say. Yes it’s a public school but that’s about the only difference.

Winner of LS/SF get Long Beach Poly most likely.
There is 4 real D1 teams every year it’s always SJB, MD, Cen10 and someone that always pops in this year is Servite, it’s been MV, OC before . So D2/3 is good spot for Sierra Canyon. I’d like to see Inglewood vs Sierra Canyon that’ll be a good one.

LBP vs SC or Inglewood in a regional game would be fire!

Congratulations to Alhambra for advancing farther than expected. Division 1 or 14, doesn’t matter, especially to the players and their families. I was told many years ago when a team plays above their ability and talent it’s a sign of good coaching. Alhambra obviously has that. Keep it going Alhambra.

Hey CIF does some SS nabob send their kid to Sierra Canyon?
That is about the only explanation that Sierra Canyon keeps getting down division’ed every year.
Time to go to Division 1 with the big boys.
After all if you are recruiting the kids of NFL players, you need to go to D-1 — What is taking soooo long?
