2021 Mid Valley Player of the Year: Carlos Hernandez-Monrovia

Carlos Hernandez is the 2021 Mid Valley Sports Player of the Year

Carlos Hernandez led his team in receiving yards. He also led the Rio Hondo League in receiving. But that’s just the beginning. There were much loftier goals that were met.

Hernandez, with 1,594 yards on 71 receptions, was second in the State. That’s correct. The junior Monrovia receiver had the second most receiving yards in California. He also scored 23 touchdowns in 11 games. By the end of the season coaches were devising defenses just to try to stop him. Hernandez was also a ballhawk on defense with three interceptions and piled up 80 yards on punt returns.

Monrovia rolled through the regular season a perfect 10-0 with Hernandez leading the way, before the Wildcats fell to Norte Vista in the first round of the CIF Division 6 playoffs. Hernandez only a junior, will be back next season for one last high school run. In 2022 Hernandez may reach for even higher goals. For 2021 he is our Player of the Year.

Cooper Cupp is somewhat taller than many other slot receivers, including Brandin Cooks, DeSean Jackson, and the recently retired Julian Edelman, who are all listed at 5’10”. What they all have in common is that they’ve had successful careers in the NFL.
Cupp appears to be sufficiently fast when he’s running those post and crossing patterns. He certainly knows how to get open. Barring serious injury, Cupp ought to be an offensive force for several more years.

@ Pac 5 Scout: I agree with your overall point, but Cooper Kupp isn’t short at 6’1″; maybe he’s a little underweight from your perspective. A 40-yard dash time of 4.7 seconds isn’t extremely slow, either.
We can probably agree that Kupp has good hands and moves, and he could become the greatest slot receiver in NFL history. That touchdown catch he made over the middle against the Vikings on Sunday was a work of art.
From T. Peterson: Pac 5 Scout’s point is correct. 6’1″ is short when you use it for the eye test. Especially in today’s crop of receivers. A 4.7, forty is not fast for a receiver – especially for one looking to be a first round draft pick. But as he pointed out Kupp may go down as one of the best receiver’s ever if he keeps this up. So you don’t always have to pass the eye test and lower round picks can be successful if they work hard enough. All his points were spot on.

Sadly too many scouts rely on the eye test. Usually the college scout. You will notice more and more NFL scouts are finding their players from the lower leagues and divisions. Those guys are not prima donnas but team players just looking for a chance. Watch the ist quarter introduction of NFL starters and you will have to look up the names of the Colleges they are from. The 6’3″ receiver with 4.4 speed will get an offer even if he has yet to catch a pass. Guys like Hernandez get their’s the old fashioned way, they earn it. Cooper Cupp 6’1″ 185 4.7 forty. Small, slow, white from where ? Eastern Washington U. Drafted 3rd round and the announcers said the Rams just wasted a pick. Go figure. He is well on his way to being the GOAT of receivers if he can stay healthy. You would not look twice at this guy if he was playing flag in the park league.

Are you kidding me. Undersized etc. 6ft,175lbs and can run. He can change gears easily. Has natural instincts about the game. Understands and can read a defense. Oh more importantly he is a great student and a great young man.
So Coach ,he has to play whomever is in front of him at the time. He doesn’t schedule the competition. Oh yeah last time I looked, the sport is a team game. So the Team losing a game is not on him, it belongs to the team.
He will be a player on Saturdays for some lucky coach and God willing hopefully on Sundays. It all requires hard work and dedication. I know for a fact he has both.
Coach, check your spelling before you post again. Not a good look, especially when you are critical of someone and you do not know them.

Simple truth is he is undersized
and transferred to a school that wasn’t really a big step up competition wise. If you look at their schedule, the best win is Los altos or West Covina which are lower level programs. They played a similar team in the 1st round and he struggled and that team was bounces in the 2nd round.

Sometimes guys are just good high school players and there is nothing wrong with that. He can to a JC and see if he belongs.
