(Rosemead) – Arlin Slayton was announced as the new head football coach at Rosemead Monday Athletic Director Marc Harisay confirmed. The hire is pending board approval.
Slayton was the offensive coordinator at LA Wilson last year and the running backs coach at Sierra Vista under Sergio Villasenor and Matt Villasenor the two years prior. He also coached with the Villasenors at LA Wilson in 2018 and began his coaching career at LA Wilson, his alma mater, in 2009.
Slayton graduated in 1996 from LA Wilson as the school’s all-time leading rusher. He had his number retired by the school. Slayton went on to play college football at Minnesota State.
“I’m ready to take the next chapter in my life,” Slayton said. “I’m looking forward to it. We have a lot of talented players returning.”
Slayton indicated that he will be co-coaching with Robert Darling, who will be his right-hand man, but that he will be the head coach. Slayton will be bringing several coaches with him from the Sierra Vista staff.
“We’re getting the band back together. It’s going to be mostly the same staff from those Sierra Vista teams. We’re going to bring the same intensity that those teams had,” Slayton said.
Slayton takes over for Matt Castaneda who stepped down at the end of the season after four years to take the head coaching job at Diamond Bar.
Last year the Panthers went 6-6 overall and advanced to the second round of the CIF Division 12 Playoffs before losing to Woodbridge.
Nice move El Monte.
Congrats to coach Slayton , he was a great player at Wilson and I was a coach at ELAC when he played for us! Awesome guy!!
People can say what they want but if this guy can bring back that good Rosemead football who cares.
@ Del Rio Watcher,
You got stability there because the Whittier School District is one of the highest paying school districts in the entire state of California. Coaches get jobs there and don’t want to leave a six figure salary with tenure.
Your move El Monte? What and who is it going to be?
Matt coming over from Amat?
Well deserved. Was a key piece of the puzzle at Wilson and at Sierra Vista. Mission Valley got a little tougher today.
I do like the stability of the coaches in the Del Rio.
Kind of interesting seems like a lot of schools are going after the coaches that bring the hype and buzz but don’t necessarily build, I’d be steering clear of that coaching tree if I were an admin, but to each their own.
Transfers TO Rosemead? Come on.
Here comes all the transfer talk.
Congrats coach don’t listen to these haters!
