    10 Pesos,

Who said anything about special needs or slow learner? Parents are not using that excuse. Parents really don’t need an excuse when taking them out of the public school system after the 8th grade, and immediately enrolling them in a private school’s 8th grade.

What will fix the age thing is prohibiting NCAA from offering schlorships to students that played any sport while in high school at 19. Boy or girl. They hold back kids to earn some schlorship cash. Can you blame them? It is legal.

I get why people want to have the upper hand but let’s draw the line on the age limit. If you’re 19 you are too old to play HS football. Go compete at the jr college level. I don’t buy he’s special needs and/ or a slow learner when they repeat the 8th grade twice. Just my 2 cents

The Vatican historically is probably the best organization for covering up crimes, sins and bad publicity. This Mater Dei, Amat, Damien story already has a ton of dirt on it.

    Just an Ol’ Has Been,

Great post! I do believe you answered your own question, it’s physical and mental advantage. Scholarships are becoming even harder to come by with Sports/Academic academies being founded and funded, it’s no longer exclusive to the Mater Dei’s or the John Bosco’s. Again though, the late 18 early 19 years old high school players isn’t anything new, not by a long shot. I’d even go so far and say that a very high percentage of Juniors and Seniors that have been offered scholarships are of this age.

Everyone on twitter just wants to ride Amat, but let’s be real there’s so much wrong with this entire situation, lots of gas thrown on this little fire on twitter for years now, the Mattv effect might seem great because of his connections, but how has a class institution like Amat really fallen into this crap? I don’t care if someone doesn’t want to shake my hand after we whooped their DELETED i can walk away with dignity and class, that is what Hagerty should’ve done. What was the Amat kid thinking by saying such foul classless things to a grown man.
, what was bechtel thinking by attacking a player, what the DELETED is a grown DELETED man doing playing for Amat? I remember a day when people would send their kids to Amat because their quality institution instilled some great values into young men and had good football, now it’s like the opposite. things won’t end up good for bechtel, but I can say the same thing about Amat, something tells me things will not end well over there either especially if they continue on this path.

With regards to the Damien-Amat incident, let’s all try to take a step back and not get ahead of ourselves here. Reading everyone’s comments, most seem to be taking a particular side. While a few on here have been able to remain neutral and methodical in their messages.
These two coaches obviously have history. Which appears neither are fond of the other. We know the schools and surrounding communities have tried to make this a rivalry. We can all agree that these are two different caliber programs. Far from a rivalry.
Now based on the reporting and formal statements that have been made, we can assume there is also a student-athlete from Amat who has alleged an assault was made on him. I sincerely hope that all can agree no coach should aggressively put his hands on a student-athlete in a fit of rage. It would be different if the coach was being firm in an effort to separate his own athletes but that doesn’t appear to be the case here.
Now taking a step back, I’m confident that we can all agree, if the Amat coach simply avoided the Damien coach, all would be well and we’d only discussing the lack of sportsmanship. But if the Damien coach felt the need to make issue of this and seeked out the Amat coach to exchange “not so pleasantries”, the Damien coach might be the one out of line here. Given the multiple comments regarding Damien coach, he seems to have image issues. As an outside observer, he struts out with his team in tow much like the Servite coach. Quite honestly, I’m not a fan of how either of them march out with chest sticking out like they are the ones who are entering the ring. Seems as if they are trying to make it about themselves rather than the “kids” (or should I stick with the term “student-athletes”).

This brings me to the bigger issue, why in the good lord’s name are parents holding their kids back two years, let alone one? This student-athlete really gonna be 20 next year right after graduation? That means in his junior year he was 18, when most of his peers in his junior class are only 16. I’ve been around for a while in the hs football scene but damn…..and if he were to get into a fight with any of the students on campus, he’s technically an adult in comparison to them. And if he wanted to date anyone……ah never mind. That’s a whole other issue.
Either way, I think CIF may need to take a long hard look at how they are making these age eligibility bylaws. An 18 or 19 year old in our great nation IS IN FACT considered an ADULT. But this “student-athlete” would be in high school for those two years. For what? Athletic advantage? Physical and mental maturity advantage? I think not by the allegations being made in his choice of words towards another adult. Come on folks, the aspirations of making our kids into a standout athlete by these means of holding them back is in real need of re-evaluation.
Accountability is tough. And in this particular case, many parties need to be held accountable for their actions (and their lack of).
Student-athletes, coaches, parents and CIF members all need to hold themselves accountable. I encourage all to review what the CIF’s Mission Statement actually says.
Just an opinion from an Ol’ Has Been.

Bechtel suspended. Article does not say who initiated it, the admin, the diocese, the DA? Also what about the bad sport Amat HC? Is he blameless?? I thought coaches were to be examples of sportsmanship? This thing should be easy. Suspend both coaches for the season. With schools already loaded with recruits coaching does not really matter. Watch Damien do much better with a get back coach filling in. Less drama on the sideline. Kids can just relax and play.

It’s possible that the Mater Dei thing was set up in advance, with the beaters promised a cut of the settlement, and the family raking-in the lion’s share of the score. It’s no coincidence that this took place at an institution with deep pockets.

19 year olds playing high school sports is nothing new. As for altering birth certificates, that’s a rare occurrence, almost non-existing. You hear this more often when it’s a student themselves having done so AFTER they graduate from high school. The reality is, parents found the loopholes years ago. One is having the child, when eligible to start Kindergarten, having them instead start at T-Kindergarten, or just repeat Kindergarten. Another move, having their child repeat 8th grade, which may be done when family enrolls student at a private school for a 8th grade, after completing their 8th grade at a public middle school.

No student whose nineteenth (19) birthday is attained prior to June 15 shall participate or practice on any team. A student whose 19th birthday is on June 14, or before, is ineligible.

You could be 19 years old after June 15th anything before that the players ineligible at least that’s what I read!

Every good high school team has a few 19 year old players. Heck these days parents alter birth certificates to make their potential super star kids years younger to steal opportunities from real 17 year olds. The fix is in on everything.

That was going to be my question: What are the rules about kids being 19 and playing against kids that are 14-15. That is like a kid that is 15 going on 16 still playing pop warner. It just doesn’t seem fair. I know the freshman running back at Amat was doing that last year. Playing against kids 12-13. He looked really cool beating kids 2 to 3 years younger. I think if you turn 19 during that season you shouldn’t be playing.

It was started because the Amat HC is reported he was holding a grudge for a year for a hand slap by Damien HC (what ever that is, I thought that was a good thing, now a face slap that’s another thing). Two Catholic HC’s being so petty and childish what’s next are they going to hold their breath or throw themselves on the ground kicking and crying? Both should be suspended.

Football isn’t always pretty, it isn’t always fun and isn’t always about wins, you might get your ass kicked here and there but how you punch back is the lesson you must take with you, ER didn’t go down without punching back in spite of the injuries. Idk about no one having fun, it’s simple we are not very accustomed to losing because we’ve been spoiled with so many victories, we need to win or lose with dignity, coaches, players, parents, fans! Yes the bye comes at a good time, time to heal up and win some football games!
