@ Anonymous: I do have a take on what was done concerning the quarterback position at Alhambra back then, and I can see both sides of that question.
The coaching staff may have moved a little prematurely to install Darrian at quarterback when he was a sophomore in 2007. However, he put up very good numbers his junior and senior years, which was an accomplishment that was all the more remarkable because Alhambra didn’t run the ball well during those seasons.
I’ll come back to you later with some additional information on that. I’m currently on deadline with Alhambra’s defensive stats from last week, and I have a long day coming up tomorrow. (A substitute teaching job, followed by the Alhambra vs. Keppel game. I’ll keep everyone posted…)

@ Alhambra Fan!: My comments that you alluded to were in response to an “Anonymous” who specifically mentioned athletes who played for Gil Ruedaflores in the early 2000’s. (During the period of 2004 to ’09, to be precise.) So, my responses were specific to the Ruedaflores era.
Lou Torres, whom I regard as an excellent head coach, ran the program in 2010 and ’11. He indeed coached the Moors to the CIF Division 11 quarterfinals in 2011, when the team went 9-3. I would never intentionally overlook his accomplishments, and I’ll have more to say on this topic as well.

Blame the player , not the coach?

He had timeout to clarify and coach up. Do they practice blitz ?
Does the coach have an understanding of his player’s strengths weaknesses and capabilities??

Btw these are all rhetorical questions

Nick Saban says : we don’t practice til we get it right we practice til we can’t possibly f it up

They advanced to the second round Vs Covina also Ron!. 2011 was the year. Great coaching staff!, great team. Somehow, the Coaching got dismantled. That following year in 2012 would’ve been a great year to make a run for a championship with that same staff!. What’s your take on that Ron?

Our scout says what the play even worse was it came after a timeout by rosemead. So Frank had time to go over what he wanted done exactly. Now, I’m not sure if you’ve ever played football but mistakes happen bad judgements happen all the time, but was doesn’t happen is a blitz when no one called for it… especially from a defensive back who usually have special names for their blitzes. That was a called blitz and it was foolish. That’s on the coach not on the kid. But let’s it happened your way kid went on his own, what does that say about the coaches? Either way it’s no Bueno.

@ron one of things that held Alhambra back in later years was the favoritism Gil played to certain players especially when his grandson starting playing.

SEM is horrible they do not know how to build players. Everyone they’ve well Gallardo had been there was a dude before he got there. He’s switching up staff more then he switches his underwear. Then he’s a crybaby.

SG pretenders? i dont think so they just faced a better more established team. They’ll be okay in D12-14 and thats okay. A ring is a ring especially when its a team that has been struggling for a decade. HC is doing a great job.

Arroyo back to taking another mvl title 7-3 with the losses might get placed right in the playoffs and make a run for another ring.

EM is beating who they have to beat should have took out Pomona who’s not too good and should maybe lose to only arroyo in league maybe rosemead if they could get together MV could give them a game too.

What about Those SEM coaches tells you they have the ability to adapt? You just heard Gold say they ran a corner blitz from the wide side of the field. Lmfao they play sandlot ball annexation of Puerto Rico type plays .

friday nights? corner blitz I suggest Gallardo did not coach his corners to stay 30 yards off line of scrimmage on blitz’s! The kid did not do his job correctly , so stop the coaches insults. Gallardo i not know his expertise , but i do know he knows correct fundamentals of corner biitz

@ Anonymous: I don’t act when it comes to anything, and there were a few things that bothered me about the program during the early 2000’s, although the team did enjoy some success during that time.
Alhambra won Almont League co-championships in 2002 (the year before I joined the program) and ’06. Those were noteworthy accomplishments, particularly in view of the fact that the football team’s last previous league title of any kind was won in 1964, when Alhambra was in the Pacific League.
However, the teams back in the early 2000’s were almost always one-and-done in the playoffs, despite all the talent they had. The only time they advanced to the second round was in 2006, which has always given me a sense that they underachieved.
I’d like to add a little clarity since you brought up specific players.
Zion Babb and Anthony Brown were not transfers; they both attended Martha Baldwin School in Alhambra before they came to AHS. Darrian Cazarin, who played quarterback for us between 2007 and ’09, went to Fremont School (if I’m not mistaken) and played for the Alhambra Thunderbirds. He’s also Coach Ruedaflores’ grandson.
My understanding is that Mitchell Crockom was from Pasadena, and I heard that second-hand in around 2009, which was his senior season. I didn’t get a sense that there had been additional recruiting going on until 2010, and I discovered that mostly after the fact.
Alhambra football has certainly gone in a different direction since then, but, unfortunately, the first couple of attempts to do that ended in failure. We’ve made progress since 2013, in fits and starts, under Coach Bergstrom’s leadership, and we had our shining moments in 2018 and 2019.
Then Covid-19 hit right at a time when we were facing some rebuilding anyway, and that only made things more difficult. But we defied the odds, with help from a new playoff format, and we made it to the Division 14 semifinals last year. So, you know, we’re doing our best and we’re not quitting.

The Eagles have a young squad and the team is changing. The coaches need to figure out how to develop this new talent. The younger players themselves are developing and they need to adapt to their new environment. They’re playing against bigger, older kids in some games. Hopefully they figure it out. If not this season, maybe the next one. Good luck Eagles. “Don’t drop the rock!”

  13. October 2, 2022 - 11:18 pm | Permalink

Yeah I agree… I think if SEM can have a mulligan The DC doesn’t call for a corner blitz and sticks with double teaming the only player that ran a route. Everyone else stayed in to block. Bad call for sure. But it other than that it was a good hard fought game between two teams from the black and blue league. Rosemead puts themselves in good shape and SEM needs to beat EM Gab and MV just to have a shot a loss to either of those teams spells doom

@ A-Town: Yes, Alhambra’s performance against Bell Gardens was a big disappointment; we were actually expecting a much tighter game.
It got away from us—and fast—in the first quarter. Three of the Lancers’ five touchdowns in the opening quarter came off of turnovers—a blocked punt, a fumble, and an interception (which was a “pick-six”).
Our defense showed up in the second quarter and allowed only seven points the rest of the game. That truly means something because Bell Gardens tried hard to score throughout the contest. To illustrate that point, the Lancers threw 13 passes—including several deep balls—during the third quarter, when they already had a 41-0 lead.
You could be right about the “rebuild year;” our team hasn’t been the same since it got thumped at Franklin a few weeks ago. (By the way, Franklin just ran its record to 6-0 after winning on the road against a good Eagle Rock team.)
For us, it could all turn on how well we play against Mark Keppel this week. Unfortunately, it has come to that, but a big win over the Aztecs might give us renewed life. We could make a decent run from there and get into the playoffs, or it could go the other way.

@ Anonymous (the one responding to Question Mark): You’re right about the fact Alhambra’s team is short of experienced players. My one caveat there is that while there are just a few sophomores on the roster, we have many juniors who are getting their first varsity experience now.
And, yes, our starting quarterback is a freshman. He has great potential, but he’s still learning, and his supporting cast is far from rock-solid at the moment.

All the comments about bringing in mercenary, recruiter-type coaches such as Robert Maxie, Matt Villasenor, and Mil’Von James are way off base. Alhambra High and AUSD in general aren’t going to go in that direction again any time soon.

Back in the day when the CIF had B’s and had not been bought and paid for by the privates if a coach was caught hanging even outside the fence after being suspended much less in the front rows of the stands he was suspended for more games and that game forfeited. But CIF did not do nothing because they said they knew nothing about it. Privates laugh at CIF.

Started out at MV thinking, hoping the Vikings would make a game of it but it was over after the first few drives. Arroyo looked like they were on a different level.my Vikings had no shot. So I drive to the swamp to catch a pretty decent second half between Rosemead and SEM. Game was what you love about the MVL tough running timely passing and good solid defense. The game came down to one play… 2:00 left Rosemead up 21-14 , it’s 3rd and 16 for Rosemead. If SEM can force a punt the have a chance to tie or go for the win. Rosemead has one player that could beat the defense and SEM has one player who match him. The play started out with what looked like a bracket on Rosemeads lone receiver which would be a double team. But inexplicably the corner blitzes from the numbers on the wide side of the field no way he could ever get there. The Qb chucks it up and deep, it becomes a jump ball between the two best athletes on the field, 25 for Rosemead and 4 for SEM. Well 25 comes down with the ball, 38 yards later… First down! Couple plays later TOUCHDOWN! Ball game!

El Monte beats gabby in a close battle.
Good games next week in the MVL

How are the Moors built? Didn’t they graduate a big senior class last season. Look at their roster. Lots of sophomores, freshman QB, Hand full of seniors that play. BG had the sit out period kids become eligible. One is a St. John Bosco transfer. Coaches coach, but the kids still have to play.

As I predicted Damien and Amat would play better without their drama queen coaches acting out on the sidelines. They are both more actors than coaches. Harsh yes I admit but the truth is in the outcome. Coaches trying to coach from the bleachers was not accepting the suspensions with any responsibility.
