Spartans Rule Montebello

Efrain Martinez part of Schurr’s one-two punch on the ground.

By Duane Barker

(Montebello) – The Schurr Spartans hosted the annual rivalry game against Montebello Friday night and for the second straight season, the Spartans came out on top and will maintain bragging rights with a 14-0 win over the Montebello Oilers.

Keying the Schurr victory were Efrain Martinez and Elias Navarro who combined for 197 yards and the two touchdowns. Martinez amassed 116 yards on 23 carries while Navarro did his damage with 81 on 12.

Both teams’ defenses held strong and both teams remained scoreless through the opening quarter.

Elias Navarro the second half of Schurr’s one-two!

It was the Spartan defense that took over in the second quarter forcing a Michael Valdivia fumble that Schurr recovered at the Oiler 24. Three plays later Martinez got the call on a four yard run. Andrew Murguia added the extra point and with 9:05 left in the second Schurr was up 7-0.

Later in the second, the Schurr defense got another turnover, this time on an interception of Raul Gonzales by Spartan Cesar Aguila at his own 40. It was Gonzales’ interception as he fired the ball down field on a halfback pass that Aguila stepped in front of.

After the gift by their defense, the Spartan offense went to work driving 60 yards on seven plays with Navarro getting the call this time from his own eight yard line. Murguia again added the extra point for the 14-0 lead with 2:35 remaining in the half.

It was all defense in the second half for both teams. Schurr did have a couple of opportunities in the final frame but had two touchdowns called back on penalties.

The Spartan defense got the stops they needed when called upon!

The Spartan defense held the Oilers’ Gonzalez to just 17-yards on 15 carries. Valdivia mustered a meager 131 yards on 11 completions.

The Spartans will now await Sunday’s playoff pairings to see what will be their next challenge while the Oilers could be turning in their gear and waiting for the next season to arrive.

    @Anon?

Who is turning in pads? Not the Oilers. It’s always a hater like yourself that has to eat crow right after opening his big mouth. MHS with the win last night. Good job Coach G! Good to see your boys fired up last night.

You guys were spoiled with Almont title after almont title for a while. Two bad years and you’re on the coach? If the Alhambra slip up doesn’t happen they’re in the playoffs and still could get a at-large.

I went to the game yesterday and both teams have zero talent. Schurr had a couple of kids that can play. A couple of good tough running backs and a couple of tough lineman. They definitely played to the strengths they have. Montebello also had a kid or two. But for people to come on here and blast players and coaches is nothing short of a coward at the lowest levels. They kids put in the work and these coaches do the best they can. Some people are just jealous that they can’t play or coach at the HS level. Get a life already.

Pete Gonzalez your back to how you were when you first came to the Almost league. You better go back to being a use car salesman cause if not you will be turning in your pads at the end of the 10th week every year.

    Nice job!
Let’s see if someone from the Almont can make it out of the first or second round this year. Good luck in playoffs!
