Game Night: CIF Playoffs – 1st Round

Nico Iamaleava and the Warren Bears travel to Sierra Canyon Friday night in a Division 2 battle. (Photo by Duane Barker).

All kickoffs are at 7:00 p.m. unless otherwise indicated:

Friday November 4

DIV 2

Warren (8-1) at Sierra Canyon (6-4)

Not a typical season for Sierra Canyon. The Trailblazers did lose four games. However they also won the extremely tough Mission League going 4-1 with their only loss coming at the hands of Bishop Amat in double overtime. Warren rolled through the season with a record of 8-1 falling only to Serra back in September. The Bears have an explosive offense led by quarterback Nico Iamaleava. Warren outscores Sierra Canyon.

Warren 38 Sierra Canyon 35

DIV 3

Palos Verdes (7-3) at La Serna (9-1) (California)

Palos Verdes won the Bay League with a perfect 5-0 record. We all know about La Serna. The Lancers cruised through the Del Rio and lost only once – to Warren- all year. Palos Verdes played a strong non-league schedule and is in a tough league. But La Serna is used to tough schedules. The Lancers will be ready.

La Serna 28 Palos Verdes 24

DIV 6

Northview (8-2) at Ramona (9-1)

This Northview team reminds me a lot of last year’s Northview team – starting the playoffs on the road and winning. Then the Vikings won at home in the second round before winning big again on the road. I picked against them on the road last year. I’m not letting that happen again. Ramona is good. The Rams, yes the Rams, won some big games this season and are a solid team. But aren’t most teams in the playoffs? Northview gets the win.

Northview 28 Ramona 21

DIV 7

Glendora (4-6) at Mayfair (6-4)

Good first round matchup. Glendora was up and down all year finishing 4-6. The Tartans had to come back from a 27-point third quarter deficit last Friday night to beat South Hills or they would have been 3-7. Mayfair took third place in the Gateway League behind powers Warren and Downey. The Monsoons have a quarterback in Evan Tomich who is getting some serious looks. Mayfair should have enough to hold off Glendora. Monsoons win it in fourth.

Mayfair 30 Glendora 27

DIV 8

Northwood (9-1) at Monrovia (8-2)

Monrovia dropped a couple of games this year but the Wildcats were without their quarterback Brian Salazar. Salazar and the rest of the Cats are ready to go now. Northwood went 9-1 and won the Pacific Hills League and won’t go down easy. But eventually they will. Monrovia is focused on not dropping a first round playoff game. And remember the Wildcats have Carlos Hernandez. Note to Northwood. Don’t kick it to Carlos! Cats win and advance.

Monrovia 34 Northwood 30

DIV 9

West Covina (5-5) at San Dimas (6-4)

Another nice local matchup. Both teams are coming off of losses. West Covina was shut out by Claremont while San Dimas got thumped by Northview. San Dimas is best when the ground game is working. West Covina butters the bread with the run as well. The Bulldogs threw the ball one time earlier this year against Baldwin Park and it went for a touchdown…of course. Should be a quick game with both teams running the ball. You could check out the game and still have time to catch a movie after. West Covina wins with a late field goal.

West Covina 24 San Dimas 21

DIV 10

Palmdale (6-4) at El Rancho (6-4)

El Rancho has knack for finishing second in the Del Rio and then making a run. The Dons played a tough schedule and their four losses were against winning teams. Palmdale went 6-4 overall and should go toe to toe with the Dons. El Rancho will take a couple of hits but still survive.

El Rancho 27 Palmdale 24

DIV 12

San Marino (5-5) at Arroyo (7-3)

A rematch of a Week 1 game in which San Marino scored in the last seconds to pull out a 14-13 win. Arroyo rolled through the Mission Valley League going unbeaten while the Titans went 3-2 and finished in a three-way tie for second in the Rio Hondo. Arroyo is a different team now but San Marino is improved as well. It’s hard to see the Knights losing twice to the Titans in the same year especially when the first game was in their grasp. Arroyo advances.

Arroyo 21 San Marino 14

D-10 – Covina at Cantwell – Covina

If LS was afraid then why would they schedule Pasadena, Warren, Tesoro and Damien? Your argument is weak af.

And if they were in a stronger, more competitive league then they would just schedule easier games in their non-league schedule in order to make the playoffs in this new system.

LS is competing in D3 while your team is most likely in D10 or just sitting at home. Worry about your own program for a change.

Charter Oak . are all programs WHO OPENLY RECRUIT every offseason and bring in TRANSFERS FROM WHO KNOWS WHERE ..and push it to the absolute limit while CIF turns away and they know where to find the programs who aren’t doing things legit … I have never watched or attended a LS game and thought to myself ” WHERE DID THIS KID COME FROM?” now if its the other side of whittier whats the big WHOOP ?? they arent coming from south central , long beach, CPT, LA and other surrounding areas that kinda scratch your head and wonder “HOW DO THEY GET TO SCHOOL EVERYDAY”

Bro you sound weak af. Your team gots to coach their dudes up and if you could grab a kid here and there do it. That’s how it’s done. Everyone does it. If kids don’t want to go to your schools it’s probably because they suck. When you build a program kids are going to want to transfer there plain and simple.

Ls IDIOTS, why do you hate ER so much?
you bring up ER all the time, you talk crap about our league but you still here. Stop being in denial, you benifit more from anyone by WUSD keeping open school district. Looks like Charter Oak is doing the same thing now so id expect them to stay up top the SGV for many years to come.

Being lumped in with MD ( payoffs not playoffs bigger story) and Bosco a team loaded with 19 year olds is a good thing? Winning is meaningless when recruiting is rampant. Astros are hated because they cheated, denied it then got caught on video and outed by leakers. La Serna has been busted many times by having few players in their attendance areas, DENY it even after is is proved. That is why LS is hated, not for winning but how they win. Astros were celebrated before they cheated like Canseco was, Sosa was, A-Rod was, Clemons was, Armstrong was. WUHSD allows LS to cheat even encourages it. Why? Who is getting what? Like those cheaters LS wins and records mean nothing except to obnoxious LS fan boys who wouldn’t know a football from a prairie pie.

LS is only public school program that builds player from whoever enters their school. Great coaching doesn’t need to recruit. Has nothing to do with open enrollment. If it did why aren’t all the Whittier area schools good like LS. It’s the culture and coaches.

    LS Juggernaut,

10-15 minute drive, depending how many red lights you hit on Washington Blvd, Slauson Ave, or Whittier Blvd. Oh, and of course the traffic one gets when coming in through Youngwood Dr. or La Serna Dr. Maybe 20-25 minutes if those that come from the HH area hit Colima Rd traffic.

I mean, some of them kids could have just crossed the street to CAL, PiHi, Whittier, or Santa Fe. Just saying. It is what it is.

Good luck to all area schools who get to continue into the playoffs!

    @SGV

Here is something for you to hate.

In the Cal Hi Prep 5 Year Dynasty rankings which includes this year’s games, there are ONLY 2 teams in the ENTIRE STATE of CA. (that play 11 man HS FB) that have won as many games as La Serna has (47-7), while losing fewer games than La Serna has (so 6 or fewer losses) the past 5 years.

    The only 2 =
    Mater Dei (53-2)
    & St John Bosco (48-6)

Not bad for a public school where probably 98% to 99% of the kids on the team grew up within a 10 minute drive to the always outstanding LSHS campus in beautiful Friendly Hills.

If they don’t hate you, you ain’t doing it right.

I certainly don’t hate El Rancho, Santa Fe, Whittier or Cal right now. Well maybe Cal just a little bit because they’re Cal Hi, but much love for the rest of the Del Rio League.

How could you not love LS going (55-4) since 2010 in Del Porky’s League play.

LS is hated because they win plain and simple. Even if we lose its not like we are going to pay attention to second rate teams who couldn’t make the playoffs anyway.

@ Angle: All of those bastions of recruiting, including the specific football programs you mentioned, should be placed in their own separate playoff divisions. That is, if we’re going to allow them to continue being sponsored by corporations or high-roller booster clubs.
The system we have now is so bad that it needs to be thoroughly reworked. We need to get away from the ridiculously small leagues that currently exist (leagues that have only 2-4 teams), and we also must go back to having more permanent divisions. Yes, the whole thing reeks.

I stand corrected on the record SEM 4-6

But no never has the NFL done this! Very occasionally a team might WIN a division with 8-8 , 7-9 type of record (I think Seahawks many years ago) but they were then pitted against the number 1 seed on the road .
They were not given a home playoff game against woebegone team
Two below .500 squads never squared off in NFL playoffs
Good luck to your squad , shouldn’t need it Friday night !

We’re told on these pages that teams with losing records and negative power ratings have no business in the playoffs. What is not talked about much, however, is that programs like Mater Dei, Bosco and Corona Centennial also have no business being allowed to literally stomp on their non-recruited opponents. The championships won at the top are just as dubious as those won at the bottom.
