*Note: We will post “Game Night” later this week with our predictions as well as records and seeds for eight key games.
The system changed in 2016 . Prior to that Divisions were constructed by league , and school’s size had much to do with it . Divisions we’re adjusted by league performance in playoffs , not by the individual school. Thus it was possible for a school to do well , but if league compatriots fared poorly , the league would move up slightly or not at all.
I think it means more to them . Current Southern Section is designed to eliminate blow -outs , thus making the trip to State a long grind.
Other sections are constructed more traditionally with some easy early round games. I’d love to go to state , but really 14 games should be enough
OC GUY, respectfully agree and now understand where you coming from. Best wishes to whomever you will be cheering for these next four weeks.
Just an old has been. Great to banter with you, and I probably won’t change your opinion. It’s just hard to write exactly how divisions worked back then, and how teams were moved into higher competition divisions because it does not compare to how things are now. Your summary appears pretty accurate. The teams I listed were all played in the playoffs after 2011or so. I was trying to highlight that throughout the years they continued to move up in divisions. I know by 2015,16,17 they were all the way up to division 2 and 3. Their first CIF championship was in 2002 and it was called Division 9. They continued to move up from there. The numerical number back then did not equate to strength, again it was geographical. BTW I know what schools are in Orange County. Between 2007 and 2012 the division was all Orange County. The other schools I listed were played in the playoffs from 2015 on.
Okay respect. Of the 15 2022 state championship finals socal could only win 2 with MD winning one of them. Nocal and Central Cal whomps Socal teams. I think those coaches are fine with state. State is going to get bigger and bigger.
I found an article that speaks of La Habra playing league foe, Sonora, in the 2010 semifinals. In 2009 semis, it was Cypress. And in 20008 semis, it was Trabuco Hills.
They rolled over Cal Hi in the 2007 semis.
2006 semis, they lost to Schurr.
OC GUY: Please share details if this is inaccurate.
Yes, the season should end after CIF Championships. I made the trek up to Atascadero last season to watch the Div.13 State Championship be played in a giant mud puddle. At least the State games will be played on neutral fields this season.
Geographically put together?
Sherman Oaks ND, Redlands East Valley, Oaks Christian, San Clemente.
Really? LOL
Definitely not jealous of the success of La Habra. But during that time, I always wondered why they weren’t moved to a higher division for playoffs once they began to dominate in that division. And it wasn’t an occasional championship. They were dominating for 7 of the 8 years between 2002-2009.
I’m interested to see those old brackets to see just how many of these “highly rated teams” were consistently in the southeast/southwest divisions when La Habra had their run.
I’m also curious as to what has changed since then.
Again, @New System’s comment, this does alleviate some teams from dominating in lower divisions.
You sound like someone jealous of La Habra’s success. The old Divisions, ie; southeast/southwest were geographically put together and for most of that time were all Orange County schools! Looking at old cal preps ratings during those years La Habra range would put them in D2 and D3. They played the highly rated teams in the playoffs like Tustin, Los Al, Villa Park, Oaks Christian, Redlands East Valley, Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, Edison, San Clemente, and many others that were highly rated back during that time. I agree, one difference now is you won’t be playing a team in the first round that doesn’t belong on the field with you
Thats like saying you prefer the wild card games over the Super Bowl..
From T. Peterson: No not at all. CIF Championship is a much bigger deal. Never talked to one coach who prefers State playoffs over CIF. Not one. It’s such a letdown. Winning a CIF title then losing in some meaningless State playoff game is such a downer. That’s why Crescenta Valley didn’t even participate a few years ago. It’s not worth it. They should cancel State playoffs. Season ends after CIF Finals.
Forgive me. But I had to go to the bookshelf and reach for the Webster’s Dictionary to look up the word AMIABLE.
LOL
South Pasadena , are they wary of being “whipped “ by Los Osos???
Is that worthy of elimination?
Yes he’s still there , amiable as ever . LaHabra finished in three way tie for championship in Freeway League this year with Sonora and Troy.
@New System
That was probably the best comment we will see regarding the current postseason format with regards to teams like La Habra dominating a lower division (Southwest Division was probably comparable to the current Division 6 or 7 level). I believe they won 7 CIF sectional championships between 2002-2015.
Is Mazzotta still over there? He was groomed by one of the area’s elite. His Dad was a great coach (and player) while at El Rancho and then one of the state’s best while at Cerritos.
The real playoffs dont start for a month. The CIF State Championships.
From T. Peterson: I’m bored by State Championships. Season should end after the CIF Finals.
You act like they put themselves in the MVD back in the day. But they didn’t even win every year didnt they lose to Pomona and San Dimas? Plus didn’t they win D2 last year? Nobody goes to D1 and wins outside of MD and SJB anyway.
I remember reading tweets about how Muir was in a low division and Pasadena was so high from Maxie in last years playoffs. Now he’s just a few points ways from D14.
Los Amigos plays in a dreadful
League ; they are last team in D13 and the other playoff teams from
Their league are D14 ,
Anyone can have a good record . Look at La Puente
CIF relies entirely on the Calpreps rating system to assign divisions, and when choosing which clubs play which in each division, the traditional top dog vs low dog applies. Nobody’s going to be happy with the pairings, even if God Almighty were doing the brackets. But at least we’ve gotten rid of the old setup, where teams like La Habra were able to dominate their division in perpetuity.
Then don’t watch or pay attention to the divisions that don’t interest you. Come on. Easy solution.
On the updside I am glad to see Sierra Canyon have to play with the big boys in Div One.
How many years was Sierra Canyon down divisioned to be given an easy road to CIF titles, How many years did they play in the Mid Valley small school league divisions.
I say good luck against Santa Margarita, John Bosco, Centennial Corona J Serra, and Mater Dei.. And I hope the CIF offices will resist the temptation to down division them after one year of One and done. I will be rooting for Sierra Canyon to get destroyed and humiliated.
RE anonymous
Considering that So Pas was the #1 seed from the RHL at the end of the season, I think they got screwed having to meet Los Osos (2.9 CP rate vs a 7.3 cp rate– 2 seed vs 15 seeded SP) fools gold as SP got the shaft and not the gold mine..
ONE and DONE.
But Monrovia who has had an in to the CIF board gets a doable match up and somehow gets a big bump in the Cal Preps rating for beating SM? !! Monrovia a 10 seed plays a 7 seed with similar CP ratings. I still think they should get a Kurt Scoobie penalty and be made a 16 seed human sacrifice in D-8. But that is just my opinion. Monrovia if it wins in round 1 will not survive round 2. But on the upside there is only one team with Saint in their name in the D9. So that old privates vs publics is not so pronounced in the 9.
SM got no favors in D10 as if they survive the first round they have to prospectively play the #1 seed Torrance, SM has gone down to Torrance league to play multiple times in playoff games over the years and each time it does not end well. If all holds true for previous years, Torrance-West Torrance etc is a league with big players that are very physical. Chances are SM will lose yet again if they get to game 2.
D9 has larger variances in CP ratings from 2.9 SP & St Margrets to 7.5 Rio Hondo Prep
D10 2.8 Torrance to .5 Segerstrom
You sound a little upset. If I remember correctly you thought they would be bumped in a higher division. Sg green claimed the coaches knew what they were doing and would land in d13 again 3 years in a row now. I say good for them. Also I think Monrovia we are going to actually get out the first round. South pas is fools gold they’re getting bumped
SG and Los Amigos had identical records.
I just don’t want to hear about how great they are for the next six weeks #luckofthedraw
I just don’t want to hear about how great they are for the next six weeks #forfeit first game
Too many divisions.
Then how did BP end up in D13 ????
Thanks Tim, some of these people are clueless. Guy thought he was on to something while he was typing that. Guy talking about karma. Lol…
Bro your obsession with sg. Who cares.
They move you up a division for every starter that transfers in
Ice man
Ranch QAnon 18, let the people know .
Because Schurr is pretty good and SG isn’t
0 vs -17 power ratings
How are Schurr and San Gabriel in different divisions?
Alright SGV, let’s represent. Don’t care about what place in league you were or what division your in. Just represent. Tired of being overshadowed by SFV, OC, and IE. Good luck and play hard!!!
Who’s El Rancho got this week?
@Northview so glad you made it to playoffs after tanking your last game against Diamond Ranch. Karma hits hard at placement, Division 5 with a second matchup against Bonita this year. The CIF Gods got it right. I wonder if Fred Robledo is going to go watch this one again? Will we see a better Northview performance? Let’s hope so. Good Luck Fellas.
From T. Peterson: Why would they tank when there was a chance that they could have missed the playoffs on a coin flip? Why did they battle all the way back in the second half to within one score with a minute left? Why were the starters in the entire game? So many questions and no answers. You missed the boat bad on this take. Terrible.
I respect the game to say there are no cupcakes but there is strength of schedule and that has paid off for Charter Oak.
OMG San Gabriel gets #1seed in D13 , first round patsy in Los Amigos
Why ? Genius of scheduling ?
Now we have to hear Green …..
If readers want to see a good game, drive out to Tustin High, which is hosting Warren. If that drive is too far, consider the lesser talented affairs between Santa Fe-Rim or La Puente-BG.
