(Montebello) – The Schurr Spartans improved to 8-1 Friday evening, defeating the visiting Montebello Oilers, 42-0, in the annual “Pride of the City” game on Ken Davis Field at Schurr High School.
The game proved to be a success for the Spartans, but they won in a very ugly fashion, amassing 135 yards in penalties, including two Unsportsmanlike Conduct violations.
Fortunately, for the Spartans, the miscues had little effect on their ability to put the ball in the end zone.
Schurrs began its scoring display in the opening quarter, when quarterback Joseph Alvarado scored on a 2-yard touchdown last with 1:45 remaining in the opening period. The PAT was successfully added by Robert Olivares, making the score 7-0 at the end of the first quarter.
The Spartans really got going in the second quarter, adding three more scores. The first coming on a 17-yard interception return by Albert Chavez. This was the first of two “Pick- Six” plays that we would see in the quarter. Sandwiched between the two interception returns was a 2-yard TD pop by Elias Navarro. This was followed by the
second interception score, a 12-yard touchdown, which was added by Antonio Martinez. Three additional Olivares PAT’s made the score 28-0 as the opening half came to a close.
The third quarter provided two more Spartan touchdowns. The first score of the frame came on a 22-yard connection from Alvarado to Caesar Aguila. Another Olivares extra point made the score 35-0, with 10:16 remaining in the third.
Schurr added the final score of the contest as Navarro scored for a second time in the game on a 3-yard
run. A sixth Olivares PAT made the score 42-0 after three quarters of play.
The final quarter featured a running clock, and produced no additional scoring.
Both teams will complete their league season next week. Schurr (8-1) will travel to Bell Gardens, where they will meet the Lancers in what will determine who will be the Almont League Champion. Montebello, who is still in the playoff hunt, will host the San Gabriel Matadors. Kickoff for both contests is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
