APU football last took the field in 2019…they will retake it in 2026 in D-3.
Azusa Pacific University announced the return of its football program in a news release on Monday morning.
The Cougars will retake the field in 2026 after dropping football in December 2020. APU did not play football during the COVID shutdown.
APU’s athletic teams will drop to NCAA Division III and compete in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC).
The search for a new head football coach is underway.
Yes agree, That will be good for everyone. Mid level FCS to get started and Maybe, some years in the future they could be like San Diego State, San Jose State, and Fresno State.
@ Titan,
Yes sir! But they should go the FCS route. No way big public state schools should be in the same conference as small liberal arts private colleges.
We need Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton to follow suit. They can join the dance. Great place to have football.
Oxy?
@ Great,
Whittier College already did. They even hired a coach and are already having workouts even though they won’t be playing until 2026. Now if only Occidental can follow suit!
Whittier has already announced its impending return . The SCIAC is great D3 league that was in hard times ; so glad to see this transformation that allows local “beneath the radar “ athletes an opportunity to
Play on Saturdays !
It’s always good news when a school brings back any sport, but particularly football. Maybe Whittier college will follow suit.
APU will also start women’s flag football in 2027 as well. What other schools will be on board?
