The Chargers’ wide receiver room is down one. Mike Williams, who signed with the Chargers in the off season on a one-year deal announced Wednesday that he is retiring from the NFL after eight years.

Williams played the first seven seasons with the Chargers before moving on to the New York Jets last year and then finishing up with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Williams was selected No. 7 overall in the 2017 NFL draft and had 309 receptions for 4,806 yards and 31 touchdowns in his seven years.

The Chargers have Ladd McConkey as their number one receiver and Quentin Johnston and rookie Tre Harris are the next two on the depth chart.

Quarterback Justin Herbert has been working hard to improve his arm strength and mobility in the off season which is business as usual. But now he may have upgraded his eyesight as well. Herbert is now wearing UV protection lenses that he said will help him see the field better this season. Herbert indicated at camp that he tried a tinted visor in his helmet a few years ago but he didn’t like how often he had to wipe off his visor.

Herbert began wearing the lenses earlier this week during rookie camp practices and said they have been much more comfortable. They are prescription contacts for sensitive eyes and they have improved how he sees the field. He plans to wear them throughout the season.

Running back Najee Harris suffered a superficial eye injury in a fireworks mishap on the Fourth of July. He could begin training camp on the active/non-football injury list, general manager Joe Hortiz told reporters on Wednesday.

Harris has been receiving treatment from doctors at Stanford. Hortiz added that the Chargers haven’t seen the extent of his injury yet. He is expected to report this week.

An NFI designation means Harris can return at any point during camp.
