Oh, I remember this game---(photo courtesy of Calvin Hang)

Good Afternoon!

The Mid: “So coach who starts against La Puente Josh Morales or Brandon Schreiman?

Wilson HC Brian Zavala: “Right now it’s a quarterback duel. We will give them reps, and go with the hot hand at the time.”

Correction: In the original blurb posted Friday night South El Monte’s Bryan Aguilar was listed as returning two kick-offs and one punt return for a touchdown. Actually it was two punt returns plus the opening kick-off of the second half Aguilar returned for scores.

“You know Joe,” said Southman HC Ray Hernandez. “Bryan would probably be the first one to tell you that his success had everything to do with the ten other guys who were blocking for him on those returns.”

I then asked Hernandez how he slept last Friday night compared to the week before when San Dimas dropped a 55-point bomb on his Eagles. “I slept pretty good,” he said with a laugh.

Last Add Hernandez: “Scott Morrison and his staff are putting things in place at Workman. It won’t be long before they are really competing in the Montview , they’re on the right track.”

Whittier Christian puts its 3-0 record on the line Friday when they go to St. Margarets.

According to the research (supplied) St. Margs owned the longest active winning streak in California, 44-games, before losing to Francis Parker of San Diego…No Southern Section team has beaten them since 12/2/2005. Its only two losses in that time have come to Francis Parker (09 & 10).

St. Margs, members of the Academy League, have won four straight CIF championships and won the small school state championship in 2008… The last three years they were coached by Harry Welch (now at Santa Margarita of the Trinity League). Welch is infamous for beating De La Salle in the state championship in 2006 (while he was with Canyon) to snap De La Salle’s 10 year winning streak.

The Heralds fell to them 25-13 last year but that was without quarterback Stephen Anderson who was recovering from a concussion. Jeff Worthy’s availability for this Friday is still pending.

A question rolled in from staffer Johnathan Saller about the last time Temple City and Arcadia met with both teams winless. Well, this Friday night will be the third consecutive time these schools have met winless.

In 2004 Audarrius Bailey ran for 141 yards and a touchdown, he caught another for a score in the Apaches 23-7 win. Quarterback Brian Barker threw two touchdown passes, one to Jordan Larson.

Of course we should all remember what happened last season when the game ended in a 28-28 tie and the confusion that ensued when the refs walked off the field after the fourth quarter gun.

Last Add TC-Arcadia: The first time these schools met without a victory was Week Two, September 30, 1955. Arcadia won 14-6. Which was the first time the schools ever met…(See all-time history between the schools at the bottom of Fanview Lite)

On this date in 1972: Temple City racked up its 31st consecutive victory with a 28-7 win over San Gabriel at Mark Keppel High School. The Rams, already two time defending champs, got two scores from Bob Zamarripa, one from fullback Rick Brown, and another from quarterback Bob Callas on a terrific 75-yard run in the third quarter.

The Mats scored first, in the first quarter, on a 4-yard run by Mike Aiello.

On this same date 17 years later in 1989; West Covina quarterback Gary Nesbitt connected with Erick Willis with 14 seconds left to draw the Bulldogs to within in one of Pasadena. A moment later Nesbitt went to Willis again for the deuce and the 22-21 victory.

Same night, further south, Temple City’s Terry Fesler capped a 15-point fourth quarter rally with a 5-yard scoring pass with 34-seconds left to Chris Liu to give the Rams an 18-14 victory at Arcadia.

Finally, same night, after trailing Pomona 20-16, Arroyo responded in the second for a 37-23 win largely on the legs of Darren MacLellan. The Knights running back rushed for 247-yards and two touchdowns on 31 carries. He even caught a scoring pass from Cruz Alverado.

Really Last Add This Date in 1989: Mt. View, led by then HC Joe Dankert, played Mayfair (Mayfair!) to a 26-26 tie. Dankert, who led View to back to back CIF appearances in 1987 & 88, is the father of current Cal running back Justin Dankert.

Really Last Add TC-Arcadia: This year’s edition of “The Brawl for the Mall” is at North Field where the Rams haven’t beaten the Apaches since 1996.

M*A*S*H (or is it M*U*I*R?)

The Mustangs got good news Monday when quarterback Jeff Davis was cleared to play in the league opener against Burbank. Trenchman Danny Huerta is also cleared to play. Trayveion Yates and Denzel Talifero, both recently banged up, will use this week’s bye to get healthy and be back for Burbank…Others mending include defensive lineman Lawrence “Pumba” Lopez, wide receiver Jamari Gordon and and Tairen Owens.

Stay thirsty my friends…
