Quick Scans: 7/29/09 Edition

by John Scanlan

The Dodgers posted their first 3-game losing streak of the season when the Cardinals downed them 10-0 last night. It’s pretty difficult to almost get to August before losing 3 games. They still have an 8 game lead, so it’s not time to get on the bus for Panicville.

The Giants acquisition of 1B Ryan Garko was a pretty decent one. It doesn’t make them 9 games better than the Dodgers the rest of the way, but it helps in their bid for the Wild Card.

To answer Torosian, yes, I still do trade Adam Dunn for James Loney. In a heartbeat.

Mark Buehrle broke the record for consecutive batters retired when he ran his string to 45 batters before walking a batter on Tuesday. It’s remarkable because Buehrle isn’t a big strikeout guy and the bounces have to go just right to pull it off.

ESPN is going to have multiple stories about the “impact” of Brett Favre’s decision to not play on the Vikings. Smart coaches plan with the players they have, not the ones they might have. I doubt Brad Childress had a different game plan all brewed up for Favre and is now throwing a hissy fit because he won’t be there. It’d be nice if ESPN gave professionals and their audience a little bit of credit. I guess it’s more entertaining to make up news than report it.

I don’t care if Michael Vick plays again in the NFL. All I know is I want to be on the other side playing against him. He wasn’t that good a quarterback before going in the slam and I doubt he has gotten any better while making license plates and avoiding shanks.

Chris Snyder, a catcher for the Arizona Diamondbacks, got injured a few weeks ago and went on the DL. His replacement, Miguel Montero, started killing the ball and has earned the starting job. Snyder was activated from the DL yesterday. Did he pout? Complain to the press? Refuse to play? Nope. He said he’s comfortable with a backup role and said, “Yeah, there are no secrets of what the little guy next to me (in the clubhouse) has been doing while I’ve been gone…He’s raking. He’s been given playing time, and that’s what he showed he can do.” Snyder is a candidate to be traded by Friday and it sounds like whoever gets him is getting a good character guy.

Looks like I was wrong about the Angels offense. They lose Vlad Guerrero and Torii Hunter and just recently got Juan Rivera back and didn’t skip a beat. They should be able to hold on in the A.L. West and then anything can happen in the postseason.
