CV Says “Hello Quarterfinals”

By Tom Hendrickson

(Downey)- Crescenta Valley used a 12-0 run to close the third and start the fourth quarter to break open a tight struggle with Warren and claim a 67-55 win Tuesday night.

Warren and CV battled back and forth through a hard fought first half. The Falcons led at the of the first, 17-15.

Joeseph Campos’ basket put the home team up 28-27 in the closing seconds of the second period  until Cole Currie was fouled in the act of shooting right before the buzzer sounded. Currie made both free throws and CV went into the locker room with a 29-28 margin.

“In the second half we played at our pace and our switching defense contained Warren instead of going for steals,” said Falcons HC Shawn Zagarian.

As a result CV closed the third with seven straight points to build a 46-37 lead.

Starting the fourth Currie hit a three and Tade Keshishyan added a basket making it a 12-0 run forcing Warren coach Ryan Hart to call a timeout with the score 51-37.

A 3-pointer by Ife Kalejaiye broke the streak for Warren.

“We slowed the ball, controlled tempo, gain momentum and didn’t look back,” said Crescenta Valley’s Dylan Kilgour about the second half surge.

CV put the game away as the starters made 7 of 8 free throws down the stretch before both coaches emptied the benches.

Kilgour finished 5-8 from 3 point range. Coach Zagarian observed that Kilgour always has a “great one (game) after a slow game”. He led CV with 19 points. Davis Dragovich added 17, with crucial offensive rebounds and putbacks. Dragovich said, “We came out sluggish…in the second half we came out more energized, fired up and took advantage of our size.”

Warren leading scorers were Joseph Campos, Kalejaiye and Lorel Johnson with 12, 11 and 10 respectively.

Crescenta Valley plays El Toro High School from Lake Forest, CA Friday, February 24th. Gametime is 7:00 PM @ CV gym.

Kilgour commented, “I’m really excited…we have good fans and everyone will come out.”
