Gabrielino 2 — Mountain View 1 (8 innings) 

Gabrielino again prevailed in extra innings, sliding by Mountain View 2-1 to stay perfect at 2-0 in MVL play. The Eagles, who preceded this with an arduous 15 inning walkoff win against El Monte last Friday (3 to 2), led 1-0 in the first on an RBI double by Vinnie Albelo before the host Vikings tied it in the bottom of the fourth. Gabrielino set themselves up for another dramatic finish in the top eighth.

With runners on first and second, Vinnie Albelo went up to bat and lined one towards the third baseman. However, it slipped out of the infielder’s grasp and was bobbled to load the bases for Francisco Gonzalez, who got an easy RBI as he was struck by the pitch, plating Johnny Moreno for the eventual game winner. Moreno scored both GHS runs.

Angel Acosta went the distance (8 innings) for the victory, striking out 9, issuing one run (earned), two hits, and 3 free passes (1 BB, 2 HBP). Acosta lasted another nine stanzas in Friday’s marathon versus El Monte, where he posted another 2-hitter (zero walks or HBPs) with a school and career record 18 strikeouts. He now boasts a 0.96 ERA, is 2-1 after 5 appearances, 36 1/3 innings of work, and has 45 strikeouts against 5 walks and HBPs. Gabrielino will make the trek down to The Swamp to play South El Monte this Friday at 3:15pm as MVL play resumes.

South El Monte 2 Arroyo 0

South is also undefeated in MVL play at 2-0 after a 7-2 win over Rosemead last Friday and most recently, a 2-0 shutout of Arroyo. The Southmen paved their path via two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth. David Mora, who led the frame off with a double, later scored via 2-base throwing error on Aaron Saavedra’s poke to third. Saavedra stole third and rounded out the scoring for South.
