Los Altos Gets a Kick out of Upset

By Matt Schuler

(West Covina)- With the game tied at 14, Los Altos quarterback Lorenzo Silva led his team on a meticulous 12-play drive down the field, then got to watch teammate Alex Henry kick  the winning field goal from 23 yards out as time expired to give the Conquerors a 17-14 upset victory over West Covina Friday Night.

Silva also converted a fourth & 6 on the drive, finding Esturado Marcos for 17 which kept the drive alive and led to the game winning boot.

Before the nail biting finish, the game appeared to be over when Los Altos lined up for a previous field goal attempt, which would of put LA up by two possessions with just under four to play.

But the defending back-to-back CIF champs didn’t cringe so easily.

Instead, West Covina’s Aaron Franklin blocked the attempt and Muleck Henderson picked up the live ball and returned it 80 yards to even the score at 14 with 3:21 remaining in the fourth.

Los Altos’s defense held the Bulldogs to just one offensive touchdown.

Wes Covina’s only other score on a fake punt attempt, which was taken 55 yards to the house by Aaron Salgado and put the Dogs up 7-0 late in the first.

The offensive star for the Conquerors was Marcos. He finished the night with over 170 total yards and a key 50 yard touchdown run with 4:55 in the fourth to give LA their 14-7 advantage.

The win now leaves both teams at 1-1 in Hacienda League play.

“It means we’re back in the hunt,” said Los Altos coach Dale Ziola. “(The Hacienda League) is the toughest league in the southeast division.”

Gabriel Aceves had a crucial 25 yard punt return to set up LA’s first score and Trevor Vimala had a couple key catched throughout the night for the Conqueres

Los Altos host Rowland next week and Westco takes on Walnut.
