The Versatile Warrior: James Fernandez catches 3 for 132-yards and a Td and here rushes 37-yards for another.

(La Puente)- South El Monte’s Ray Hernandez returned to his old digs to see senior quarterback Garrett Hrey throw three touchdown passes, James Fernandez score twice, Jesus Vargas punch one in and blow up the backfield in La Puente’s 35-6 win over the Eagles on Thursday night.

Hrey (6-13-220-yards 3 Tds) put the Warriors on the board with 2:29 remaining in the first quarter on a eight-yard pass to Jesus Vargas. Nearly two minutes later Fernandez turned the right corner and went 37-yards to make it 13-0

Hrey was close to getting another touchdown pass when he swung the ball out to Jose Perez. Described as a pass over the public address, the play was clearly a lateral, and better saved as an argument for old age because Perez took it 12-yards for the touchdown.

A 39-yard pass to Giovanni Rosales hit paydirt, and a 68-yard score on a deep dig route to Fernandez capped the Warrior scoring and the half.

The second half went sloppy offensively for both squads but the Eagles managed a four-yard scoring run by sophomore quarterback Andrew Barcenas in the fourth.

The LP defense limited South to two first downs in in the first half, recorded four sacks (two by Pedro Candia) and continually spent so much time in Eagles backfield one would have thought they were getting ready to enroll.

Vargas added a sack, an interception and to his reputation as one of best defensive players in the Mid-Valley Division.

La Puente is now 2-1, South El Monte falls to 0-4.
