(Diamond Bar) – Diamond Bar came into Friday night’s contest riding high on an impressive win over Bonita. West Covina was looking to bounce back after being completely dominated by Diamond Ranch. Diamond Bar welcomed West Covina to its homecoming festivities at Holmes Memorial Stadium as the Bulldogs brought gifts all night in the form of five costly turnovers allowing Diamond Bar to roll 34-13.

The Brahmas  didn’t help themselves any  by committing four turnovers of their own, but the difference was  the Brahmas were able to convert Bulldog turnovers into points and move to 2-0 in Hacienda league play, 5-1 overall, while  the Bulldogs dropped to 0-2 in league, 2-4 overall.

West Covina’s offense is built upon running the football, opposing teams know this and the question is becomes “Can you stop it?” It is one thing not being able to run the ball due to a stout defense and it’s another thing not being able to run because a fumbled handoff exchange between the quarterback and running back. Friday night the Bulldogs committed 3 turnovers off of fumbled exchanges, and this does not count the fumbles that they were fortunate enough to recover.

With formidable size on the offensive line the Bulldogs came out on their opening drive of the first quarter and pounded the ball with running back Steven Garcia to drive 80 yards for a score to give West Covina it’s only lead of the game 6-0, after a missed extra point. This would be a good as it would get for the Bulldogs. The Brahmas took control of the game from this point forward, scoring 27 unanswered points to go up 27-6 at the end of the third. The Brahmas offense used a balance attack both though the air and on the ground that kept the Bulldogs defense guessing all night.

  • Diamond Bar’s Quarterback Tyler Peterson went 18 for 30 for 215 yards , 1Td, 4 Int.  West Covina threw the ball six times all game.
  •  West Covina’s Steven Garcia finished  with 141 yards on 30 carries 1 TD. The leading rusher for Diamond Bar was Tyler Brown, who finished with 91 yard on 12 carries 2 Td.
  • With 11:51 left in the fourth, West Covina’s David Ford sustained an injury, and was carted off the field. Best wishes to David, his family and teammates on a speedy recovery.
  • The Brahmas travel to Los Altos next week in a Hacienda league showdown with the Conquerors. The winner puts themselves in great position to move atop the division as the team to beat.
