(San Dimas) – South Hills had more then three plays in its playbook. It only seemed like the ones used were Jesse Garcia left, Garcia right and Garcia up the middle. It was South Hills HC Albert Rodriguez’ plan to pound the ball and Garcia carried out that plan to near perfection with 38 carries for 224 yards and two touchdowns as the Huskies beat Covina 38-29 Saturday night in the opener at San Dimas High.
South Hills chewed up the ground for 338 yards overall. Andrew Segura had 49 yards on just five carries including a 29 yard romp late in the game that iced it. The Huskies did throw it occasionally. Garrett Fonseca completed 5 of 12 for 58 yards and two touchdowns. Fonseca only put it up three times in the second half.
Covina trailed by 16 late in the third quarter but refused to go away. Eric Williams and Pearnell Smalley kept the Colts in the hunt.
***South Hills led 10-7 after one and 17-15 at halftime.
***The Huskies blew it open in the third scoring on their first two possessions. Garcia scored on a 13 yard run and after Zak Barron intercepted a pass and returned it to the Covina eight yard line, Quinn Cotter hauled in a touchdown pass from Fonseca.
***Williams had four receptions for 119 yards and a touchdown. He also had four carries for 45 yards and a score.
***Smalley rushed 17 times for 126 yards and a touchdown.
***Covina had two turnovers, both interceptions, while South Hills did not turn it over.
***Covina quarterback Joe Benavidez completed 8 of 12 for 193 yards, 1 touchdown and two interceptions.
***Zach Morea had three receptions for 70 yards for the Colts including a 63 yard reception in the first half.
***Williams caught a 33-yard TD strike from Benavidez with 4:37 left and also caught a pass for a two point conversion that cut South Hills’ lead to 38-29, but the Huskies ran out the clock on the next possession.
***“That’s kind of our style the last couple of years. We’re a power team and we’ll run the ball at you. We have a quarterback in Garrett that can throw it if we have to but we like to run the ball,” said Rodriguez.
***Covina will travel to La Puente next week to take on the Warriors while South Hills faces La Habra.
