Burroughs HC Keith Knoop

Burbank HC Hector Valencia

Good Evening!

San Gabriel quarterback, and Mid Valley favorite, Ike Valdez gets a pair of offers to go play some football in Iowa. Having recently seen Iowa, I’d go…Outside of flooding, tornadoes, and a lack of In ‘N Out Burgers its a gorgeous place.

One school making an offer is Iowa Wesleyan where current Texas Tech HC Mike Leach cut his teeth as an assistant putting together the “Air Raid” offense.

The other school, Northwestern Iowa, is nicknamed the Red Raiders.

Burbank and Burroughs will meet for the 61st. time this week for the Pacific crown.

“I was at the game in 1952, everyone was there,” said Burbank alumnus Lorlei Skaggs. “I remember the final score was 33-0, we all left at halftime. The football team was awful.”

On this date in 2005 Burbank’s Robert Linda threw for 300-yards and two touchdowns, but the Bulldogs fell to Burroughs 35-28. The Indians (Flatlanders) were led by Thomas Kyle’s 249 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Keith Knoop’s team also recorded six sacks, intercepted two passes, and forced a fumble in the win.

Interesting point: Both teams were winless in league coming into the game, neither team would make the playoffs, and said goodbye to the Foothill League when time ran out.

A year later, 2006, Burroughs went 7-0 and won the Pacific. In week ten they played a 5-1 Burbank team and beat them 24-6. Both teams made the playoffs.

This will be the first Knoop and Burbank HC Hector Valencia will meet head to head.

Last Add On this Date: In 2005 James Heggins (Baldwin Park) and Bill Zernickow (San Dimas) were first year coaches at their respective schools and meeting for the first time. Heggins and BP had the advantage of Aaron Harris, who ran for 180-yards and two touchdowns, including an 86-yard scoring run. The Saints were only able to put together 169-yards of total offense. Roy Curry scored SD’s lone touchdown.

Last Add BP-SD: The last time San Dimas won at Baldwin Park was in 1999, when they beat the Braves 9-6.

Two NFL questions: Are the Broncos coming back down to earth? And is Vince Young suddenly a great quarterback because the Titans beat the 49ers and Justin Gage made a great catch?

Speaking of grateful…you ever lost a wallet?

I’m not talking one of those velcro jobs you might have had when you were a kid, I’m talking something traditional, leather, stuffed with identification, credit cards, and over a thousand dollars cash?

That ever happen to you? Something similar ever happen to you?

Well it did to a man in my town…It was found on the ground in a park by a fellow who could have used the dough. A thousand plus dollars cash inside…

What did Mid Valley staffer Carson E. Powers do?

He picked up the wallet…didn’t put it in his pocket, didn’t take the staff out to lunch…didn’t play the lotto…didn’t buy a meal.

Mid Valley staffer Carson E. Powers walked the wallet over to city hall where it was later returned to its rightful owner.

Carson E. Powers…my brother…did that.

True story.

I am inspired by this…I may lay off Andy Villathedevil for a week, maybe even eight days…I might stop all Keppel, Ganesha, Hoover, and Blair jokes…Might even quit wishing for gastro-intestinal distress upon Nancy Pelosi…Might even refrain from vomiting at the sight of Al Gore…Might even give my girls a day off from house work…Might even let Johnny “Blue State” Scanlan take me to task on Republican wrongs…Might even ease up on the Raiders, Vince Young, and my hatred for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim…

Perhaps this inspiration could lead me to new fields of philanthropy…I could do some yard work…notice things I never have before like stop lights…Take my wife to lunch…perhaps even recycle…and maybe I could be the catalyst to a rebirth of virtue…a renaissance…

NAAAAHHHH!!!

Stay thirsty my friends…
