Former San Gabriel running back Arthur Brown is playing professionally. No it’s not the NFL, CFL or even the Arena Football League but instead he’s in Serbia playing for Sirmium Legionaries.
After graduating from San Gabriel, Brown continued his football career in college playing four years at Dakota Wesleyan. After college Brown didn’t want this football career to end. After pursuing different opportunities Brown landed on the roster of Sirmium Legionaries.
The Sirmium Legionaries is the oldest American football team in Serbia, founded in 2002 in Sremska Mitrovica. The team grew quickly becoming one of the most organized and successful clubs in the region.
The city of Sremska Mitrovica the home town of the Legionaries, has historical roots in the Roman period. This led to the club name (they were brave and fearless Roman soldiers).
Foreign Desk,
Ledesma?
Good luck Artie, pursue your dreams
That’s literally the dumbest thing I read today. Besides the fact that there is no singular European culture, ANY chance to see something different is valuable. I was lucky and curious enough as a young man to live and work in a lot of places, including Europe, Asia, Oceania, New England, and the deep South. All of these places did a great deal to shape who I am and to help me understand the world and my place in it. They also did a lot to help me really see my home for what it is. In some ways, it made me more critical. In others, it made me far more grateful, and I love living in the SGV, in So Cal, in the USA. How can you really understand your home (hometown, home country, whatever) if you never learn to see it from another perspective?
@FD: Interesting take. You get alot of stimulation and ideas here in the SGV do you? Like it or not right now our government is the laughing stock of the world. Maybe you went to Europe and just visited the tourist traps. I recommend you read the book “Playing for Pizza” by John Grisham. It’s about European football, a good read.
The entire European continent offers nothing positive in the realm of ideas, it is merely an oversized theme park of centuries past. In terms of ideas that count, it is European philosophy which has ruined the American experiment, so Brown’s “immersion” in that culture is a negative.
Serbia has much better weather than anyplace with Dakota in its name. Siberia, OTOH….
Also, many many beautiful women, not a few of whom wouldn’t mind an American anchor baby.
Great move, young man! Too few young people take advantage of their chances to see the world.
Good luck Arthur! Keep your mind straight and your heart full. I guess I’ll be shipping care packages to a farther place. The Sahagun’s love you!
Not surprised at the lack of knowledge from my fellow posters. Get educated boys. American football is being played all over the world now in various pro leagues. I laud this young man’s efforts and the education he will get by immersing himself in another culture to play the game he loves. The experience he will gain and the wide angle view of the world is priceless. Bravo!
This makes Ledesma a hero, and Brown too because he brought knowledge of deodorant to the old world.
Wow, MVS covering Serbia now?
Congrats Arthur! You are going to feel right at home in Serbia. It’s a lot like South Dakota but colder.
I literally know none of the cities or where the heck they are, lol.
