Matt Lopez from his days at San Gabriel

Temple City alum, longtime assistant football coach, Matt Lopez (AKA: The Suave One) has returned to the San Gabriel Valley and the Rio Hondo League by joining the staff at San Marino High School.

Lopez began his coaching career at Temple City upon graduation and later joined Jude Oliva’s staff at San Gabriel. After a 2011 title appearance with the Matadors, Lopez moved on to San Dimas and was part of the coaching staff in the Saints CIF championship run in 2013. He later moved on to Buena Park.

“Buena Park was great to me and my family,” Lopez said on Monday evening. “But I am happy to be back in the Rio Hondo League and close to home.”

Lopez will be working with wide receivers.

He did run laps, but it was the Suave One’s choice. After the butt chewing heard ’round the world, Z gave him an ultimatum, run the laps or you’re fired! Suave chose laps. Rumor is he ran until he projectile puked, like something out of the exorcist. Doubt that part, but he got a ring because he ran so I bet he’s glad he did it!

He never missed a game at San Dimas. He never did laps. He was never suspended. They even hired him to work at the school the next year. I think you are just trying to stir the pot.

Suave One? Coach Z. Made him do what?.. Laps? Oh no, I don’t care what I did not grown man would ever make me do anything I didn’t want to do. How about this, we fight whoever wins gets to make the other do laps. Other than that. NOPE!

The DELETED chewing Coach Z gave “The ‘Not So’ Suave One” over the donut incident on baseball field is legendary around San Dimas! Never heard of a coach running laps, but Z made him.

Good business move? What, he’s building his resume for when he goes to the pro’s. I’ll venture a guess it’s also not about the money. I would think coaching where you once played would be a powerful inducement, if you were wanted there.

Only reason he was hired at SAN Dimas was because of Mayorga. Only reason he wasn’t fired at SAN Dimas for riding his car around the baseball field and doing donuts was because of Mayorga.

I’m sure there are enough TC alumni tryng to bring back the glory days of “I right 24 power” … I’d call it a good business move!!

Just wondering why Riley didn’t get him on his staff at TC ? Staff filled out already? Couldn’t or wouldn’t make room for another alumni?

Another prime example of coaches bringing the best coaches you can find. Love it!
Some coaches who bring in peons need to get on the boat
