Bonita Ousts Aguilar

Ibis Aguilar has been let go as the HC at Bonita after two years.

By Tim Peterson

(La Verne) – Bonita has parted ways with head football coach Ibis Aguilar after two years the school announced Monday.

Aguilar took over in 2016 replacing Adrian Medrano, who left to take the El Rancho job. Aguilar went 6-14 overall in the two years – 3-7 each season.

The school released a statement that said in part “Making a coaching change is never easy, but it is an especially difficult decision when you know that a coach has given his all to our school. We appreciate the countless hours Coach Aguilar, his family and staff have devoted to the players and the football program at Bonita High School. We wish Coach Aguilar well in his future coaching endeavors.”

Aguilar was also the head coach at South El Monte from 2011 to 2014. He went 19-24 overall during a four year stint with the Eagles and made the playoffs his first two years.

Bonita will begin the search for a new head coach immediately.

Let the coach bashing begin. Let the fake news be printed. WORST COACH EVER. PLAYERS LEAVING TO GO TO (enter your schools name) HC STEALING MONEY, COACHING STAFF ILLEGALLY RECRUITING, COACH FIRED DID NOT RESIGN, GOOD RIDDANCE TO FIRED EX COACH, WORST HIRE EVER BY (name your enemy school). ANONYMOUS HIRED WILL BE BEST COACH EVER (anonymous goes 0-7 then quits)

Coach Ceniceros has no clue who Podley is and is definitely not applying for this spot. Funny how people, just throw his name out there and don’t even know the man. “Area Coach” don’t worry about where he’s been, just know that he changes cultures and brings results…

They need to go get a coach that is going to get kids out for football. Too many Bohi kids that should play Football, don’t. They need to find a guy that is going to “attract” talent from other schools. I don’t think Medina is that guy. I know he is Podley’s boy & has been loyal as hell to the program ,but it is time to move on. They need a guy that can fund raise & offer different uni-helmet options. The uniform deal to me is dumb & not important, but the kids love it. The job they are offering is awesome, football, PE & credit recovery. Go find a great coach.

It is time for Medina to step up and for Bonita to take a leap of faith and make Medina HC. He has been DC forever, has been loyal to the school and visa versa. He is humble, parents and administration know him well and he knows high school football backwards and forwards. If he can’t do it they will know quick and no harm no foul. But here is the rub, Medina has to want it, he needs to want it.

ive watched football around the area for over 20 years. the comment i made about jude and elias coaching was topic of discussion i hear good and bad about each coach. but the only bad i hear is on here from anonymous people who dont seem to have and validity in their reasoning. if any school id rather them be at it would be Monrovia. graduated there 1995 and seen the possibilities when we have good coaches. so yeah id rather have them coach here.

    @ Almont:

Mark Keppel’s administration has improved during the last couple of years, but the Aztecs’ varsity football team has a legacy of losing that dates back to the beginning of the new millennium. And, the number of athletes going out for football there has been dismal.

San Gabriel’s prospects for improving are at least somewhat better than Keppel’s, in my opinion. I think the Matadors will have a chance to become competitive again within a few years if Coach Encinas can get established and attract those Rosemead kids who live within his school’s attendance boundaries.

Alhambra High’s current administration has been highly supportive of the football program. However, the school district, which has allowed the football facility at Moor Field to remain a dump for decades, has been apathetic at best.
Losing two very winnable games (against Montebello and Bell Gardens) this past season meant the difference between making back-to-back playoff appearances and falling a buck short.
I don’t think the coaching staff at AHS gets enough credit, considering what the guys have had to put up with. The players have to buy into the program, stay focused, and show a willingness to grind it out through thick and thin for an entire season.
We’ve had some positive moments since 2015, but we still haven’t become consistently good.

Pioneer will do fine in new league. In the last 5 years vs. 605 league opponents:
    Artesia 1-1 (2015 PHS 28-AHS 0)(2016 PHS 14- AHS 26)
    Glenn 3-1 (2012 PHS 35- JGHS 28) (2013 PHS 44- JGHS 26) (2014 PHS 3- JGHS 7) (2015 PHS 62- JGHS 0)
    Cerritos 2-0 (2014 PHS 30- CHS 28) (2015 PHS 49- CHS 6)

We will see. Only time will tell. The coaching carousel continues to go round and round!

La Mirada – New coach has ruffled the wrong feathers and got boat raced in the 1st round. Coach M will be back sooner then we all think

Whittier – Coach has under achieved but administration has his back. They won’t move on but I believe 2 playoff appearances in 7 or 8 years is not good. Former coach got a lot of the blame but it seems the guy that replaced him is no better. has the name but not the ability.

Pioneer – For 10 years Pioneer has complained about the league they were in, they can’t compete. Now that they are in a new league, don’t expect them to compete in that league. Both Glenn and Artesia beat them. Pioneer needs to stop looking for excuses and start producing in the offseason.

    Let’s do some speculating here!
    Short List:
Alhambra – Underachieving in the Almont
Cal High – Took over a playoff program and has run it into the ground. Admin needs to pull the plug quickly
West Covina – Too quick of a fall
Gabrielino – Talk about an administration that is happy with below average performance
Whittier Christian – Poor performance and program numbers are aweful
Pasadena – Need to fix this, no athlete wants to go to their home school because no production from coach
Warren – Lara wants to go back to Poly, his heart isn’t at Warren and it shows on the field
Baldwin Park – Look at Cal High

    Next Season Add:
    Buena Park
    La Mirada
    Whittier
    Pioneer

Bonita will attract a lot of candidates, academically strong and athletically! There is a football history and say what you want…parental support. Doubt Coach z will come out of Assistant Principal salary heaven but one of his assistant coaches is back and coaching at La Serna with head coaching experience would be an interesting fit. Coach Mustain may be someone to look at, especially if he is interested in being a head coach again. He knows the area and what it takes to win with those types of kids.

Bonita’s administration may be a foul stew of incompetence, but at least they pulled themselves from the muck long enough to toss a coach that was going nowhere, and they did it after just two years! Compare this with the entirely stagnant situation at places like Keppel, San Gabriel and Alhambra. How bad must things be with THOSE administrations?

This demise of Bonita athletics rests on the hiring of Bub as principal, his sticking his fingers in a well made recipe cooked up by principal Ketterling and ruining the dish. Podley if he had anything to do with this wreck is because he allowed Bub a free hand in dismantling Bonita athletics without venting his disapproval.. Bonita is and will be lingering at the bottom of major sports in the Palomares for a couple of more years. Ibis was the sacrificial lamb. Football is the straw that stirs the drink at Bonita and it has to have a competitive program. Good luck coach Aguilar.

The hires are all a result of Derek Bub. Podley did not hire Ibis. He fought against putting him in that situation. He knew the job was bigger then he was. Derek Bub. Climbing the ladder was why Bub was there and gone. If you recall Bub pushed the hiring of the former LP coach at Etiwanda. Have your facts straight. Baseball and softball hire = Bub.

What made you think Ibis would do well at Bonita after he got fire from South El Monte, that being said Bonita has a bigger problem. The powers to be have been making bad decisions sense he been name vice principal. Podley made a good football coach but he is a terrible assistant principal. He butchered the baseball hire the softball higher and the football higher, the trifecta. If anybody needs to go it is Podley. The parents in that district will only take so many bad decisions. I will be surprised if he makes it through the year.
