(Montebello) – Schurr’s Miguel Aguero hit Cantwell’s Anthony Ruiz with a 20-yard touchdown pass in overtime to give the South a 20-14 win over the North in the 2018 Hall of Fame Game Friday night at Schurr High School.
The South stopped the North on four and out on the first possession in OT, then took over and scored on the fourth play when Ruiz caught the strike over the middle and fought his way into the end zone. It was the first Hall of Fame Game ever to go into overtime.
The North, down 14-8, tied it with 5:40 left in the fourth quarter when Arcadia’s Max Davila scored on one yard leap over the top. However the extra point was missed paving the way for the overtime.
The tying touchdown came after the North took advantage of a South fumble setting them up at the South 31. Darnell Williams of Burbank broke off a run down to the one-yard line before Davila punched it in.
The North also got on the board first after another key South turnover. A bad snap on a punt gave the ball at the North 10-yard line. Two plays later Williams scored on a two-yard run and Davila scored on a two point conversion run – again with a leap over the top – for an 8-0 lead with just over seven minutes left in the first quarter.
The South got on the board with 7:47 left in the second quarter when Ryan Torres capped a 55-yard drive with 7-yard touchdown run. The South went for two but failed and the North led 8-6 at the half.
Aguero connected with Jalen Chaves of Cantwell on a 24-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter to give the South its first lead. Aguero found South El Monte’s Sal Tovar in the endzone for a two point conversion to make it 14-8.
The North then got even in the fourth.
Lance Babb hauled in an 11 yard pass from Aguerro on the first play of the overtime possession that led to the game winning score and a South celebration.
Aguero threw for 125 yards and two touchdown to earn the South Offensive MVP Award. Babb, also of Schurr, caught six passes for 79 yards. Aaron Maldonado of Bishop Amat came up big for the South defense with six sacks.
For the North, Anthony Lira of Burbank anchored the defense to earn MVP defensive honors.

What transfers did they get?
Does the transfers make shurr the favorite to win it all?
Fridays all star game was a good one. It was nice to run into a lot of familiar faces, gets the blood going to be talking about football in May.
Salesian is actually in pretty good shape. Number are up over last year.
Breaking News…AD position needs to be flown. The head coaching position needs to be flown. Against the teachers union and contract the teachers have signed to just appoint someone to these positions. Stop spreading your fake news.
@Breaking News
Ramos get the AD job? Didn’t know he was up for it!?
Oliva gets the HC job? that would be nuts!
Who’s the DC over there?
If Oliva gets the HC does Elias leave for another OC job? Teams like Alhambra, SEM, BG, and Rosemead should reach out! What can they lose? Not anymore games hahaha
BG is a laughing stock. AHS wished they received at least one transfer. Like every other year the main focus is Montebello.
They are gonna need a lot more then what they have gotten cuz those lower levels were straight Garbo..
Concerned parent, are you serious? So then they can go over the bball players we bring in every year or the kids we got for football last year or will get this year. Stop throwing rocks everyone, we all do it.
You heard it here first!
Dave Ramos stepping down at Schurr to become the new Athletic Director.
Jude Oliva new head coach.
More recruiting to continue!
Schurr wins CIF!
@cif
You understand, or you probably don’t, the division is the size of the school, not the ability of the players like in college. With CIF changing the divisions a little for competitiveness some smaller schools play in higher divisions because they have good strong programs. But genius just because a kid players at a D1 school doesn’t mean he will play D1 in college. I have seen plenty of lower division kids get D1 scholarships and even go on to the league(that is the NFL) get a clue. You probably send your kid to a D1 school to sit on the bench, just so you can say he is better than all the others because he is in a D1 program. Just not true.
Most lmao… please
@cif
You buster! I guess you played high level football? Or you just talking trash for no reason! Most of the kids that played in the HOF Game will continue playing football past high school JC D3 D2 NAIA even a couple D1 players… what ever it is it’s all higher than ugh D8
high school football.
Why is everybody talking about D13 Cantwell and D11 Schurr. They are in weak divisions. The North vs South game other than a few amat Kids were all lower Tier players. Most of those Kids could not play beyond D8. Let’s be Honest here.
We will see about that
The CIF SS allows anyone to Transfer. How DoYou think Mater Dei and St. John Bosco are strong every year. It’s open season right now and Schurr can get anybody they want.
So your lower level teams got spanked and your varsity team was very senior heavy. Tell me who is he going to throw to Bab or Romi oh wait not there next year. May the best team and hopefully not the one with all the recruits.
You guys are funny. D12 politics!
Remember you guys are D12, not D1
You say you have been there for years and talk about integrity. But did you turn your head when Gil Rudaflores was doing his thing? Takings kids from everywhere else. Or did you say something? Stop crying
Anyone who is familiar with Jude O should know that this is how he operates. Egocentric and illegal recruits players from surrounding schools.
@ Yup: The rules should apply to everyone, and they should be enforced. In this particular case, the CIF office should have been contacted by now.
@ Almont Fan: I agree with you; I guess we’re total relics with our romantic notions about integrity, honor, and fair play.
We will see when the put up 50 again against you guys
@BG
Yeah Schurr has nobody now. The Spartans will not be able to compete with the Mighty Lancers this year. We shouldn’t event play because we won’t win. Lol
The two teams will meet in a few months till then keep believing Schurr has nobody.
IF CANTWELL AD AND PRINCIPAL WERE SMART THEY SHOULD REPORT SCHURR TO CIF
Good but doesn’t no weapons to throw to at shurr all the talent gone. Lower level teams were horrible.
@ Cantwell Alum, QB has transferred but do you blame him. He was a good leader to my son and we wish him well. The program is barely hanging on. The new coach has energy but has no DC/OC/HC experience. We had high hopes for this coming year and now we are struggling to field a team. I hear the new HC is related to the new AD some how. Either way, my son will not be playing anymore. One day they only had four kids on the field for spring ball. Heart breaking.
Oldest secret out there although idk how that move happens without undue influence since he was part of air raid.
It’s unfortunate how these kids are manipulated by coaches and parents with the hopes of chasing a CIF Title.
What ever happened to coaches “coaching” kids, rather than “recruiting” from other schools to improve.
Then these coaches think they are great coaches when there teams improve.
If you want to prove your a great coach, win with what you have.
I think you sent it twice 😂
Running back Mykael loera from Montebello high school transfers to schurr ??
O
Is the cantwell Qb any good?
Running back Mykael Loera from Montebello transferred to schurr to ?
According to a former Cantwell Coach and Alum, Yes The QB Transferred to Schurr and more to follow. Cantwell is down to 9 players and might have to Cancell Their football program. Salesian is also is down and in bad shape with Kids Transfering out.
Can anyone confirm that the QB from Cantwell has transferred to Schurr?? Also heating several other Cantwell players are sure to follow.
This game indicates exactly NOTHING about which area –or which players–are superior. For the non-football minded out there, there is never enough time for these all-star athletes to become familiar with a new system and group of guys sufficient to play at a high level. The whole thing boils down to a lot of hitting and yelling, and then everyone goes home. The game will have meaning next year, however, if Los Altos hosts: it will substitute for a Conquerors playoff run.
What I saw last night was a very competitive game in which it looked like all the players had a blast out there. Very competitive, hard playing, prideful, and pretty good players competing, It seemed A lot of the guys knew each other and enjoyed one last hurrah out there. My take on the game:
North side had a better game plan put in and executed very well.
South side relied on athleticism and the big play. Way too much passing in my opinion when they had 2 good running backs to pound the rock. The Covina LB was everywhere, the Burbank DL was a man out there. Maldonado is on a different level and it showed. Aguero is a legit QB as well as tapia and WC guy. Arcadia QB was very good as well.
Definitely no line presence
But Aguero got sacked more than the other QBs did and you can’t have pocket presence with no pocket lol.He did get quick slants to throw to babbs which was nice..When the others getting reps were longer route trees and plays forced to the short side of the field….kinda disappointed that you SGV fan couldn’t pick that up.
Lol your a hater. He scored two of the three TDs how does he not get MVP? Who else get MVP?
What I saw was no offensive line and Aguero being the only one who had the pocket presence to avoid and get the ball out! Script?! Yeah those coaches planned on going to overtime to have their kid throw a TD pass! Get over yourself, Jesus I enjoyed the game and a lot of the people around me did too.
Parent
Hush. It was a great game and all the kids played. They’re still playing to win
I think the voting for the MVP awards are right on. Aaron Maldonado was the best and most productive player on the field. The kid from Schurr threw two TD passes and if he didn’t deserve it the second best performance on offense was Babb the WR from Schurr.
I saw some great tackling on both teams, but I was impressed by the sure tackling from the Arroyo kids. Both teams had speed. Some of the faster players tried running east and west, it did not work when you have speed on both teams. Those Covina boys stepped up. Overall a very entertaining game and I saw a lot of head coaches at the game. It looked like a head coaching convention on the sidelines, but our head coach was no where to be seen. I hope Amat represents next year like it did this. Maldonado “go bears.”
@Anonymous Oh I see you must have been blind. The Offensive MVP I am pretty sure is the QB who connected to put all the points on the Board. Stop trying to make something negative out of what was a really good game for all the players. They all represented their schools really well North and South. Move on with your life.
I think who got the MVP went according to the script….I mean what do parents expect?
At schurr
Schurr staff
Schurr kids
Come on did you really think another kid was going to get offensive mvp over theirs?They stuck to the script…You gotta understand they are trying to build again and showcase their program
@parent
What the heck are you talking about? Please enlighten us? How was the staff being bias!?? I thought they did a great job subbing in
Parents are never happy!
I haven’t seen the Pacific league represented like this since 2015
when the west handedly defeated the east. Stop sleeping on our kids!
Who deserved the offensive MVP in your eyes?
@parent
I remember when the All Star game was the East vs West. The East would always blow out the West, not much of a game. That game last night was very even to the end, 14-14 at the end of regulation. It was a great finish with a walk off TD pass from #8 the offensive MVP to the Cantwell kid. The people who put this game together by changing the boundaries did it right. I was not expecting much, but this game delivered, like number 77 with 6 sacks, that kid will be fun to watch next year.
Dang schurr coaches sure weren’t bias on who got to play and who got the awards. What a shame. Come on North and South committee pick fair coaches.
