Okay El Rancho people lets hear the excuses, you had a Linemen Competition today and did not finish in the top. I understand Upland winning the overall competition but you couldn’t beat Arroyo who took runner up? Arroyo ended up winning quite a few competitions today. Let me guess, there were some injuries…guys had previous engagements. Let the excuses begin.

    SGV Coach and SoCal
El Monte runs the Double Wing which comes from the original Delaware wing offense. Don Markham who just passed away (bows head) introduced his version because he did not have very many talented players. Simply put, the offense puts more blockers where they run the ball. Coach Cineseros runs Don Markham’s version, there are several others of course. Each coach adds their own wrinkles, and Jessie has his. It helps having players like the Penny boys when he was at Norwalk or that NFL quality. As for nobody runs it in College, thats not quite true. The versions that are run are a bit different by Georgia Tech Option, Army, Navy, and Air Force Academies. Why? Because they don’t get the top players recruited to run the Pro, West Coast or Spread Offenses. Sound familiar? As far as the Pros, Look closely at the Wildcat. In key short 3rd and 4th downs as well as the near the goal line situations the plays are like the Gun Wing. With that in mind, several teams playing up north are quite successful. Marin Catholic, Grant, and many other teams run a version, as well as another team from Concord, Tim Murphy’s Ugly Eagles. He developed it and now out of the Gun. Which is the version Mtn View used to run. Remember Bellevue Washington, who broke De La Salle’s 151 game winning streak is always one of the top teams in the country. So, you ask why is Mtn View changing? Well, its simple, a different coach, a different philosophy I guess. Maybe a mistake, maybe not, time will tell!

The spread offense is very affective. Arroyo is not the only team that runs it well. You don’t see the double wing in college or NFL for a reason. The teams that run the double wing are behind the times. How many playoff appearances did Mt. View have with the double wing, none. Now some teams run it better than others, they’re many factors. Do you have good athletes, does your OC set up plays, do your players execute? Teams with marginal talent can beat teams with superior talent.

Question to Mt View fans why leave the Dw or your version of it to the spread when the last time you ran something besides the dw you were 0-10? I believe the dw got you a few 5 win seasons and just missed the playoffs a few times. There’s one team in the MVL that could run a successful spread and that’s arroyo.
