How about transfers can play the first 5 games, instead of the last 5 games?? So they can play the non-league portion of the schedule and then the Sit Out Period starts for games 6 and goes until end of season, whether there are playoffs or not. People can debate whether they should be allowed to play in playoffs or not. But then it avoids the sitting out first 5 games which don’t matter, and then they sit out the 5 or more most important games. Just a thought

@ Montebello resident, too: The NCAA has the one-year sit-out requirement in effect for athletes who transfer from one university to another. Of course, college athletes have five years to complete four years of eligibility.
The college “red-shirt” year is sometimes used for the purpose of transferring. For example, quarterback Troy Aikman attended Oklahoma University for two years before transferring to UCLA. Aikman had to sit out the 1986 season before he starred for the Bruins in ’87 and ’88.
High school athletes don’t have that sort of latitude; they simply have four years to compete. Any sit-out period means lost eligibility for them, so I have sympathy for those who find themselves in difficult situations such as the ones I described.
However, I agree that we generally need to have a one-year sit-out period for student-athletes who transfer without a change of address. Exceptions should be made only in extreme cases.
As the rules currently stand, it’s too easy for an athlete to transfer from one public school to another, and the temptation to cheat is too great.
Getting rid of the 30-day transfer rule and cracking down on phony addresses would be good places to start in correcting this situation.

to Ron Vrooman….How bout a one yr ban no matter what the excuse is. I mean no matter what the excuse!!!! go ahead move. but you can’t play a whooooooole yr at what ever school you go to………for any reason. “move”, divorce, trouble at another school, wants to play at this or that place, recruited, undue influence, etc etc etc…and you can go…but you have to sit one full yr. no questions asked. And you only get ONE move. any other moves after that and it’s a no go in that sport. lol

“Transfer Mania” has gotten out of hand. The near-chaos we’re experiencing is the predictable outcome of changes in the CIF rules which date back to at least 2012, when the “30-day” transfer rule went into effect.
The CIF Southern Section will have to reckon with the issues of athlete recruiting and transfers in the public school domain, and I believe that the day of reckoning needs to arrive soon.
We must stop catering to the small percentage of parents who think that their offspring are going to be the next superstars in the NFL or the NBA.
High schools should primarily be in the business of providing educational opportunities for their students, instead of serving as farm teams for universities and professional sports organizations.

I believe that athletic transfers should be allowed to some degree, but they need to be more closely regulated, like they were previously.
Families should be able to move from one public school’s attendance area into another’s, and any student-athletes in those families should remain eligible as long as the move is a real one.
There are also cases in which a parent or guardian’s employment is a factor. In those situations, school districts that receive transferring student-athletes typically have a permit process which can be utilized.
Otherwise, transfers should be limited to a set of extreme circumstances. Those could include serious family problems, a school abruptly terminating a sports program, or some type of internal dysfunction that causes havoc in a program.

Coaches who encourage student-athletes to transfer through tampering, illegal inducements, and/or the use of fake addresses should be severely disciplined. (Of course, such violations must be conclusively proven; there should be due process here.)
In addition, the athletic programs and schools that employ these coaches should also be sanctioned.
Then, we might get back to a greater level of sanity in high school sports.

I could actually your JV won league I believe I think only 3 teams had a Jv team but that’s cool, you’re freshmen lost to EM and Arroyo I think. All your offense left 95% of your rushing and 100% receiving. QB gone. I think a 4th place finish should be a soild place for you eagles of the south

I have never know Rancho people to suck up so hard to other teams.

Why doesn’t Tim Peterson try to let everyone know the truth about what’s going on? It feel like he has sides with Schurr on this. I’m just a concerned resident of Montebello. We need to know the real details!!

From Duane B.: Exactly what truth are you looking for? We report on what we KNOW and what we can confirm!
Honestly its time to stop worrying and complaining if you lost someone to another school and work on changing the football culture at your own school. Maybe then they won’t leave!

Thanks, Odyssey. That is all that I was really trying to say as I was getting a little perturbed about how people were down talking my son’s school. We should cheer on all the young men who want to play the great game of football. Good luck to all the area teams this Friday. It is game week, Baby!

Lets not talk down on the cantwell kids, show some respect. They’re not division 1 or 5 talent but they are good enough athletes at lower divisions.

Seems like everything you said you need to do the research. Alhambra and bellflower might be pick’ums but I pick them and you got your 3 league wins. Mead better, Em better, Arroyo still better, Covina come on, Nogales L. Here’s the thing I know probably more about the players not only at South but around the MVL and other leagues better than most. I know what south is bring back in players and what coaches came in.

Went to Bonita-Northview scrimmage and I only had 2 observations.

    1. I was correct when talking about how boring these scrimmages are.
    2. Bonita was in the Power I formation for probably the 1st time this century.

  20. August 12, 2018 - 3:53 pm | Permalink

The Eagles are back to 3-7 seasons??? @SimonP what are you basing this on? A scrimmage game? Cmon bro. First of all do some research, SEM plays in a league vs Mt View Gab and Marshall there’s three wins right there. Then you have games vs Alhambra and Bellflower they should win those. They’ll get whooped by Covina but Then games vs Nogales, Rosemead and El Monte which are probably pick em games. Arroyo is way down this year not nearly what they were the last couple years. So I think the 3-7 prediction is off they could be 5-5 at absolute worst and probably top out at 7-3 or 8-2. I understand the coaching changes can and will hurt in the short term it’s not just Mike Mooney gone it’s a few very well respected people in our community that are also gone but that doesn’t mean SEM just falls off the map. You got seniors like Gomez and David Duenas and Gaspar Beltran. Marcos Montoya a Jr will turn heads for sure he should fill the big shoes left with the graduation of Sal Tovar. They’ll be extremely young at QB after losing three year starter Daniel Olmos graduated but I believe he’ll be ok as the QB isn’t asked to all that much in the wing offense except manage the game. Let’s give Gallardo a shot here to prove his worth. Two semifinal runs is quite impressive and the swamp was alive once again. He’s got a lot of new staff on board it seems to be going ok. This like all other seasons will be a fun one 10-0 or 1-9 it’s always fun. I know El Monte is hyped right now, but WE don’t lose the Griffin Bowl…and it staying at the South until EM gets lucky one season here or there. Never ever doubt the South! We’re small, but we love our Eagles!!!

Let’s be real Paul, The Cantwin Kids are not good. They are good enough for D13 . They could not start in any School above D10. The two Kids that made All league last year for Cantwin were Cathedral Transfers who never saw the field at Cathedral Reciever Ruiz and DB Gio. Schurr just win with your own kids .

Those transfers are very good players and most or all will start at Schurr. Any team in the area would have loved to have them. We are not talking Trinity League teams around here. BTW, Schurr played in D12 last year, one notch above Cantwell.
