South El Monte Uses Big Plays to Topple Mountain View: 40-7

(El Monte) – The South El Monte Eagles utilized a combination of sound offense, a solid defense, and great special teams play to defeat the Mountain View Vikings, 40-7, Friday evening at Viking Field.

South El Monte (3-3, 2-0 in Mission Valley League play) scored first, last, and often…utilizing a combination of big plays and sustained drives to defeat the Vikings. South’s first score of the evening was a 52 yard interception return by Senior Gasper Beltran with 8:03 remaining in the opening quarter of play. The Eagles added two more touchdowns in quarter #1, a one-yard TD blast by quarterback Mario Zamudio at the 2:57 mark, and a 67 yard touchdown bomb from Zamudio to Beltran with :31 remaining in the opening period of play.

The second quarter found a continuation of the Eagle scoring barrage. With 10:08 remaining in the period, Junior Marco Montoya added to the scoring with a 65-yard punt return for a TD. The Eagles added another score in the quarter, as Zamudio connected with Senior Ivan Villalobos for a 12-yard touchdown. The Eagles’ final TD was also scored by Montoya on an 11-yard run. The addition of four successful PAT attempts, added by Beltran, made the score 40-7.

For their part, the Vikings (1-5, 0-2 in MVL action) never really seemed to find a groove. Mountain View did find the end zone, however, in the middle of the second quarter of play. Junior QB Richard Ramirez scored on a 1-yard TD blast. The PAT was added by Junior Brian Perez. The score was the result of a sustained 67-yard drive, which saw the Vikings hold the ball for over six minutes.

Next week finds South El Monte returning to the friendly confines of the Swamp, as the Eagles will host…wait for it…The Gabrielino Eagles. The Vikings will travel to El Monte to battle the Lions. Kickoff time for both games is 7:00PM.

    Hey Knights,
It’s friday nights man it’s football when our team played Covina we took our lumps it still counted. So we play the “ducks” and have success of course we can celebrate. Also One wipe and myself have been pleading to get Gasper Beltran the football, they coaches probably read the blogs because sure enough they got him the football and he delivered in break out way. And I wouldn’t be bragging too loud because from what I hear Arroyo isn’t looking like the juggernauts of years past. The word I heard was “soft” upfront! So take it easy man the games will play themselves out and the chips will fall where they may. South El Monte has always thrived being the under dog. We’re gonna be ready to take a bite out of that cocky tail of yours! “ you want a fight? Now you got one”! Immortal words from Coach Thompson.

Not aware of any, but was there any talks about placing Mt. View in the new 605 League? The league created to allow struggling programs to perform at an equal level, thus gaining confidence.

OMG this hilarious are you two really bragging about stats over Mountain View? Who in the blank is Beltran? Lmfao! Ok remember who you guys played. You don’t hear me singing and dancing about beating Gabrielino do you? Easy there young ones. There’s two games that matter in the MVL if you guys win one of those you’re in if you don’t then you’re out simple as that. Rosemead is super disappointing this season.

Yea they finally unleashed Beltran they moved him to a wing and also a WR. and the kid delivered in a big way. I know people are saying it’s Mt View but this team these kids and this staff needs confidence and if it takes beating up on the Vikings so be it. Another break out player was Mario Zamudio our QB. Kids a great athlete I think he’s got the tools to be better than Danny Olmos or Jaime Micheal for sure. hope the kid keeps working.

Well well well. We finally unleashed Beltran and look what happens. It only mildly bothers me that it took some bloggers to force the hand of the coaches. Btw he also added a pick 6 stepping in front of a rare Viking pass to a touchdown. Hes the closest thing weve got to star right now. Weve got two stud wings now we just got to solidify the deep back situation. Gab should be an easy dub then it gets real.
