The Peterson Principle: 1/9/2019

Tim Peterson

By Tim Peterson

Nobody was shocked that Matt Bechtel left South Hills to take over at Damien. It’s his alma mater and he got a fat pay raise to boot.

Some would argue that he just won a CIF title at South Hills and with plenty of talent coming back it would make sense to try to repeat. But by winning it this year Bechtel already accomplished his goal. The Championship is the goal, that’s done, so its time to move on. When Mark Paredes stepped down at Damien it was only a matter of time before Bechtel made the move.

With Bechtel out some are speculating that former South Hills head coach Steve Bogan will be in. I don’t think he’s leaving Bonita but apparently some people in football circles do based on the messages I’ve received this week. It would be an interesting story but I don’t think I’ll be writing it. I just don’t see it.

If not Bogan then who? Matt Koffler? It’s always fun to throw Koffler’s name out there whenever there is a coaching job open. Fun to throw Mike Mooney’s name in the mix as well but with Mooney it’s actually a possibility. One guy that won’t be the head coach at South Hills is DC Rudy Beruman. He was offered the job but is instead following Bechtel to Damien.

**

Nothing yet on Cal. Former assistant Louie Zamora’s name was being tossed around as the frontrunner but things have been pretty quiet since. Dale Ziola would be a good fit and apparently was interested in the job when Kyle Trudell was initially hired five years ago but unless he pulls a Kliff Kingsbury he’s locked in at Covina.

**

Crescenta Valley won’t miss a beat with Hudson Gossard, who was the OC, taking over for Paul Schilling. It’s the same schemes, same program, same ole, same ole. CV will be a pain in the Pacific as always.

**

Speaking of Kingsbury why did he take the USC job when he knew all of these NFL jobs would be opening up three weeks later? AD Lynn Swann is taking hits for this but when a man signs on the dotted line and agrees to join your coaching staff you believe he will do exactly that. I know about buyout clauses, but doesn’t that apply when the coach has actually worked a season…or even a game? Sure USC was a stepping stone for Kingsbury but he never actually stepped on any stones. He didn’t do anything.  What he did do is go 35-40 in six seasons at Texas Tech before getting fired. Why is he such a hot commodity?

**

This is how desperate NFL teams are for the next Sean McVay. On the Arizona Cardinals press release announcing Kingsbury’s hiring, they listed McVay as a “close personal friend” of Kingsbury. I’m a close personal friend of a lawyer that used to work for the Department of Justice too but I’m not a lawyer and will never work for the DOJ. Why would it be mentioned on a press release?

**

About a month ago I asked on Twitter who would get fired first in LA? Luke Walton or Clay Helton? Who would have thought it would be Steve Alford? But when you lose to Belmont and Liberty that tends to happen.

**

Intriguing names popping up in the head coaching search at Warren. Nothing concrete yet but very interesting names. Stay tuned.

**

Gladstone’s Carlos Enis has been offered a scholarship to play football at Clarke University in Iowa. Enis, who plays both running back and linebacker, also carries a 3.85 GPA. “He was also offered by Puget Sound and we are completing his paperwork for West Point,” said Gladstone head coach Ted Clarke.

**

I like the Rams, Saints, Chargers and Chiefs this weekend. But I don’t like Kliff Kingsbury.

That’s my principle.

    LMAO!!!
BY ANY CHANCE DID THIS KID PLAY FOR THE “donCERS” ???
do yourself a favor and just stay home, if you knew any better …. you would know that ER coaches dont recruit nor “show love” …. bc if they did , they would have recruited the crap out of the Pico team two years ago that was LOADED with studs!

last season is proof, ER will coach you up. Medrano isnt the coach of the year for Del RIO for no reason…. and would have been for Whittier All Area if SP didnt have have a equal season success as ER but in a higher division.

You were just in D13 guy come on. Had your chance back to back years. It’s funny cause your always the one talking EM team isn’t even tripping on you guys. You sound like a lame on every post. You talk about your powerhouse squad like you’ve ran the MVL like Arroyo they were beating you and now we are too. Get used to it. Oh and just sit your son out if he’s as much of a crybaby as you!!!

The good teams in the area don’t want to play El Monte because they stink. Look what San Marino did to El Monte. El Monte is a waste of time. You think you can beat South Hills, San Dimas, Los Altos, Northview, Arcadia, Covina, Bonita? Charter Oak at 2-8 would smack El Monte.lol…

I hope the lions step up the strength of schedule to prepare them for D8!
Well see how braggadocious these suckers are then! Relax dude, you took full advantage of a down year in the MVL SEM, just graduated thier best class in a decade. Plus, our HC fired a great staff. Arroyo graduated their best class in a decade as well. So let’s just chill a bit aye! Arroyo won’t be as bad as last year defensively. Who knows what we’ll be like next year. All the planets aligned for you guys down league, plus D13 placement! You pissed away your one shot. You won’t win league next year then it’s Division 8 playoffs!!! Be ready!

Lol… El Monte is terrible. What did an average San Marino team do to the Lions? 80 points was it? Running clock right? Just in case you didn’t know, those are all bad.lol

El Rancho coaches will tell you if your son makes grades and works hard and stay disciplined he can play football. If he continues to work hard and maintain a 3.5 and above gpa he can go to college and play football. Realistic promises

Monte Express aka Transfer Express……please answer ONE question. Do you really think the kids in the NFL are there because of the EM coaches or because they are beasts? Big, fast, strong, athletic. Come on man. Those kids got themselves to the NFL. When it comes to playing on Sunday’s you either got it or you don’t. I know a ton of great kids that worked their tails off and couldn’t even go D1. It’s god given champ. Take that bologna elsewhere.

3 NFL players in 5 years! That’s what’s going to happen when Faamatau is drafted in 2020. What other public high school coach has produced those results? It’s called developing players. Go to El Monte and see what happens on a daily basis. Most other athletes pay top dollar to be trained by a guy who says he played college ball, but in reality only learned from YouTube. The staff at EM will get the best out of any players. Why waste money sending your kids to private schools and trainers, when EM does it for free.
