Turkey Tussle Moved to August

By Tim Peterson

(Pasadena) – The annual Turkey Tussle clash between city rivals Pasadena and Muir which has been traditionally played in November has been moved to opening night in August.

This release was posted Friday in PHS Forums.

2019 Football Season Kick Off – TURKEY TUSSLE

Who says Turkey can only be served in November?

The 72nd Turkey Tussle will be held on Friday, August 23, 2019 at 7:00pm at the Rose Bowl.

Yes, you read that right…John Muir High School and Pasadena High School will kick off their 2019 Football season with the FIRST game being the Turkey Tussle! This year’s scheduling has been more difficult than 2018! Because UCLA plays 2 home games in a row there would not enough time to mend the field for their use if we play in between and player safety was a concern.

In discussions with Muir and PHS it was determined that it was more important for our students to play in the Rose Bowl than to maintain our traditional date at another venue such as Pasadena City College. For all involved, Football, Cheer, Band, Journalism, family and friends this may be the only time they would have this opportunity to experience that iconic venue.

There were several people who worked behind the scenes so that our students could continue the tradition of playing in the Rose Bowl. We would like to thank the Rose Bowl Stadium team for working closely with us to ENSURE that the Turkey Tussle will be played in the Rose Bowl. We want to thank the City of Pasadena and the Rose Bowl again for being our partners in this game!

We hope that all of you will come out and support these teams in their FIRST GAME. We are looking forward to Alumni and Community coming from near and far.

There you have it. The 2019 football season will kickoff with the Turkey Tussle. Just one question. Should it still be called the Turkey Tussle?

It does not matter where they live. if they switch schools without moving, regardless of where that is, they must sit. They MUST move in order to play right away. even if they move next door. there must be a change of residence to be able to play right away.
That is the way i understand the transfer rule, someone may be able to speak more accurately on this than me.

You feel the same way about Montes? 4 different schools in 3 years. How does that work? Is that not athletically motivated?

The kids transferring to Muir should able to play as they live in Pasadena and decide to go to these other schools

You already know there not going to make him sit. CIF is so freaking weak. Look at what’s happening with the Rancho transfers to Mater Dei? CIF is so quiet right now.lol… If Montes does not have to sit out for an obvious athletic motivated transfer, than anyone could transfer at will. If CIF dare to impose another player to sit out, people should sue CIF. You would WIN, there are SO MANY cases where they just turn a blind eye.

Speaking of the transfers, with the game at the beginning of the season, i assume some/a lot of transfers will not be cleared yet. Seems like a big swing if Muir really does have transfers coming in, and they will not be able to play. Also, CJ Montes has allegedly transferred to Muir. will he be able to play right away.
CIF should look into the Montes transfer, 4 schools in 3 years. Doesn’t seem right. he should have to sit.

I think this is the best thing for this game. A lot of times the kids only focus on this game they out the year. To get your rivalry right out the gate will be gate. It will be easy to motivate this kids all summer. This will be a true test of who is better.
No game tape ! Just adjustments and talent.

According to the CIF-SS schedule for San Marino 2019-20 schedule, Pasadena hosts San Marino on August 23.
From T. Peterson: They haven’t updated it yet.

Perhaps the Muir-PHS game should be called “The Crown City Tussle,” since Pasadena also goes by that name. Or, how about “The Battle for the Crown?”

Also, if the turkey tussle should be moved August, I think it would be a good idea to rename the Rose Tussle, the Battle of the Roses, or the city of Rose Tussle, since Pasadena is known to be the city od roses

That doesn’t make sense…are PHS and Muir going to separate leagues or they will play each other twice in the same season?
From T. Peterson: They’re both still in the Pacific League and they’re playing each other just once. But instead of at the end of the season they’re playing in Week One on August 23.

Considering the fact the season has moved up and last year’s game was in October, dropping the word “turkey” is well overdue.
