Game Night: Week One

Quarterback James Arellanes III and the Northview Vikings host Charter Oak Thursday night.

All kickoffs are at 7:00 p.m. unless otherwise indicated

Thursday August 25

Charter Oak (0-0) at Northview (1-0) (Covina District Field)

Impressive win for Northview last week against an always solid Muir team on the road. The defense did its thing and the offense did just enough. It doesn’t get any easier this week as Charter Oak comes to town. The Chargers have had a big summer led by quarterback Richie Munoz and is looking to get off on the right track. Northview will bring it. The Vikings will be a tough out but Charter Oak pulls off the victory. Chargers survive a close call.

Friday August 26

Arcadia (0-1) at Monrovia (1-0)

Huge win for Monrovia last week at Bonita. If the Wildcats can beat Bonita on the road they can match up against anybody. Arcadia traveled all the way to Vegas only to come up empty falling to Canyon Springs. Monrovia’s offense is just too much. if the defense steps up this week it could get ugly. Cats roll.

Monrovia 38 Arcadia 14

Arroyo (0-1) at San Marino (0-1)

San Marino gave up 55 points while Arroyo surrendered 49 in Zero Week. Not a great way to start. So which defense comes to play this week? It may take a half or so but eventually Arroyo gets the passing game in gear. If the defense can make a play or two the Knights should be fine. The Titans won’t able to make enough stops to keep up. Knights get the victory.

Arroyo 31 San Marino 21

El Rancho (1-0) at Bell Gardens (0-1)

El Rancho took care of Don Lugo last week while Bell Gardens was getting smashed by Troy. It may take the Lancers a couple of years to get going under new coach Hector Novoa. El Rancho has it rolling. The Dons win going away.

El Rancho 35 Bell Gardens 13

La Serna (1-0) at Warren (0-0)

Big win for La Serna last week on the road against Pasadena. The Lancers overcame a lot, including six turnovers, to beat the Bulldogs. Warren is chomping at the bit to get its season underway. Will Warren quarterback Nico Iamaleava play? That seems to be the question after the Tennessee commit came back to Warren after initially saying that he had transferred to Long Beach Poly. It’s safe to say that if La Serna turns the ball over six times again the Lancers won’t win. Iamaleava, if he plays, won’t allow them to. The sense is that he will play and it will be enough. It won’t be easy but Warren gets it done.

Warren 27 La Serna 17

Los Altos (1-0) at West Covina (0-1)

Los Altos won last week but that tends to happen these days when the opponent is Wilson. It was a good way though for Dale Ziola to begin his second stint as head coach at Los Altos. West Covina fell to a solid Alta Loma team by a touchdown. Ziola vs. Mike Maggiore is a classic matchup. Both coaches have returned to their original schools to take over as head coach. Maggiore wins this battle.

West Covina 21 Los Altos 14

Pasadena (0-1) at Glendora (0-1) (Citrus College)

Glendora never got it going offensively last week in a loss to Chino Hills and Pasadena…well…never got it going offensively in a loss to La Serna. The Bulldogs are set for three transfers to be eligible to play this week including stand out receiver Baylin Brooks. That should make a difference for Pasadena. it’s hard to believe that the Bulldogs can be held to only two sores again. Glendora won’t go away but in the end Pasadena pulls away.

Pasadena 28 Glendora 10

South Hills (1-0) at Covina (1-0) (Covina District Field)

Nice win for South Hills over Diamond Ranch in Zero Week after failing to get a victory all last year. Covina took the week off but is ready to go in the season opener. Jacob Calderon, who picked up a win in his head coaching debut for South Hills last week, will face off against Covina head coach Aaron Berry in his debut. The Colts have had a good summer. Covina has great numbers and Berry has brought some high energy to the team. The Berry era begins with a W.

Covina 27 South Hills 20

I remember the youth leagues asked for roster updates before the season to see who was going to even have a full team. If you didn’t have a minimum # by a certain date, the team was folded and the kids were free agents.

Temple City found a team that they can beat …..I guess it helps everyone feel good but on some level also gives false notion that your program is ok when you whoop on team that barely practices with many newbies n squad

Temple City hosts Mark Keppel Tonight…Mark Keppel lost badly last week to Hoover…Will they fill
like they can rebound tonight since they beat Temple City last year…And Temple city had their
own issues this summer, barely fielding a team after an 0-10 season last year, and the
coach quitting this summer. All this may serve as an interesting game to say the least.

I am so happy the Covina, Northview, and South Hill all play against each other! I think that is great! Back in the day in the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s these were rivals! I am just happy they are playing against each other again!

    Arroyo Vs San Marino
Best game for our league. Should be close but Arroyo will just start 0-2. The knights win 35-28

El Monte vs Rio Hondo Prep
Toughest game. This one looks like too much for first year head coach Spathias. He will get the program on the right track just not this week. Prep wins big 47-14

South El Monte vs Baldwin Park
    The let’s find out game
South got off to the right start beating Alhambra. But there are a lot questions. I think we will find out if SEM is for real early on in this one. My prediction is BP 38-14
