Charter Oak Offensive in Win Over Northview

Zakkari Black has speed to burn for the Chargers

(Covina) -Richie Munoz threw for 363 yards and five touchdowns to lead Charter Oak to a 38-24 win over Northview Thursday night at Covina District Field.

The Chargers started off slow trailing 7-0 after one but exploded in the second quarter for three touchdowns including a seven-yard touchdown pass from Munoz to Jayden “Chili” Alexander with 2 seconds left in the first to make it 21-10. Munoz also found Solomon Davis on a 14-yard strike early in the second quarter to tie it at 7.

After Northview’s Joseph Guttierez booted a 23-yard field goal to put Northview back on top 10-7, Zakkari Black tuned a screen pass into an 85-yard touchdown jaunt for a 14-10 Charter Oak lead.

The Chargers needed every one of Munoz’ touchdown passes to hold off a Northview team that rushed for 314 total yards. Angel Barraza ran for 145 yards on 19 carries and his backfield mate Keanu Tauvao rushed for 132 yards and 3 scores. Tauvao’s 12-yard touchdown run gave the Vikings a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.

Charter Oak looked like it was going to put the game away early in the third quarter when Munoz hit Nathan Alvarado on a 20-yard scoring toss for a 28-10 lead.

But the Vikes stormed back with two scores on the ground on touchdown runs by Tauvao of four yards and one yard.

The Chargers finally put it away late in the third when Isaiah Johnson hauled in a 53-yard bomb from Munoz.

Luis Marin added a 28-yadrd field goal in the fourth quarter.

For the Chargers Davis had six catches for 75 yards and a score and Black caught four for 104 yards and a touchdown.

Charter Oak’s bread and butter offensively was through the air although Munoz also ran for 63 yards on 7 carries.

Northview quarterback James Arellanes III only threw the ball six times and completed one pass as the Vikings kept the ball on the ground.

Johnson picked off a pass for the Chargers late in the game to seal it.

It was the opener for Charter Oak as the Chargers got off on the right track. Northview dropped to 1-1.
