SG boundaries is South Rosemead/South San Gabriel with kids from East Alhambra as well. Most of the coaching staff at Rosemead Rebels are SG alumni. SG gets 1 or 2 kids a year from the Rebels. Rebels kids spread out to play, Schurr, Bishop Amat, Rosemead, Arroyo, Etc. As for Rosemead, their kids are from North Rosemead and El Monte.

Why do Rosemead Rebels go to SG rather than Rosemead ? Was it always this way ?

sg also has a pop warner pipe line with the Rosemead rebels. But the same thing that is happening to Gabrielino will happen to sg in time. The demographics are no joke and the working class Latinos are moving east to Riverside/San Bernardino.

Alhambra and San Gabriel are down the street from each other. In fact go to the Alhambra golf course and you can hit a ball onto the San Gabriel football field.

There is no youth baseball in Rosemead, so no talent at the high school level.

I believe football is San Gabriel’s only successful program. Basketball, baseball, soccer etc all pretty bad

San Gabriel is right next to Alhambra less than 2 miles

Gab seems to be comfortable in its new identity as a basketball/ golf / academic school similar to Keppel basketball/ badminton, tennis / academic in Almont . Very comfortable, as in one playoff appearance in 20 years .Still they’ve won many more games than Keppel .Theres no indication of anything changing here soon .
Why is San Gabriel in the Almont League ? They’re not really close to Alhambra or Montebello, and seemingly geography would put them in Rio Hondo or Mission Valley League
The natural rivalry with Gab ? I understand the MVL all district league thing , but just wondering about the history here……

Look it up virtually identical. Only difference sg doesn’t make excuses.

sg does not have the same demographics. Gabrielino gets the Asian kids while sg gets the working class Latino kids. 20 years ago the roles were reversed.

SG has same demographics. They have been very successful. Starts with coaching. SG has beat everyone in that area even beat San Marino twice. Hire a good coach and things can change.

I agree 100% with paragraphs one and three of your commentary. I have lived through a couple of these situations in real time , and it’s discouraging when the box checking strategies lead to selections that are ultimately destructive to the program as you are cast aside .

The second paragraph addresses a particular situation at San Marino which I know very little about . I did see the SM vs Monrovia game last year ; I thought I would see a “cleaner ” team in execution and plan . Monrovia won and there were a few questionable coaching strategies and decisions ……
They did have a good year although buoyed be a weak schedule (Rosemead and LA Wilson). The entire league bombed out in playoffs , but while other co-champs were placed in tougher D9, they were one of top seeds in D10 and lost vs .500 team.
So I don’t disagree with your specific commentary , but it would be great to get a clearer breakdown to understand your frustrations .

Gabrielino lost its soul when they traded in sports for high academics. Demographics killed this school in sports.

The trend appears to be for school districts to hire former NFL players as high school head coaches of football (checking the box) only to see them permeate into other positions within the school or school district. The typical result, is a fail in building a winning football program and school pride amongst the players. Being a former pro player doesn’t translate into creating a positive experience for high school kids and their families.

One only has to look up Del Mar Blvd. and see the mess at San Marino High School. No leadership. The super and board of directors don’t truly care about all students. It’s about saving careers, political advancement, checking boxes, intimidation, abuse of power and zero ethics. A perfect example of the educational industrial industry that now plagues our schools. Waste tax payer and not be accountable. Sounds like that other malfunctioning organization known as the US government.

Where have all the good, moral football coaches gone? They’re out there. But, rarely get hired.

Nice scheduling for Gab , finding Century and Workman. These two have winless streaks going and should give Gab a hopeful preseason. Not sure what’s up with coaching situation after last years craziness with newly hired coach leaving at the end of June , then hiring ex NFL guy from Fresno who abdicated for another position within the school following winless campaign which ended in forfeits last two games.
3-7 and 1-4 in woeful MVL.
