Raiders Spy a GM; Head Coach to Soon Follow?

If anyone has doubt about Tom Brady’s influence over the Raiders’ search for a GM and head coach, put them to rest because his ex-teammate from Michigan is now the General Manager for Las Vegas.

John Spytek has left his Assistant GM position in Tampa Bay to take over as GM for the Raiders.  Spytek has been part of NFL circles for over two decades and has served on the Tampa Bay staff for the past 6 years.

Of course, this means that Spytek and Brady were both part of the Buccaneers at the same time, and familiarity may help the two sync as they look to reclaim the Raiders’ past glory.  However, given that Vegas churns through GMs like slot machines through bank accounts, Spytek may not want to get too comfy in his position.  The looming shroud of a short-leash makes Spytek’s choice of QB all the more important.  Rookie in a ‘bad’ QB-draft class (which would likely necessitate a trade up in the draft)?  Veteran castoff?  Go all-in on a trade (J.J. McCarthy)?

Spytek has a lot of critical decisions to make and not a lot of time to make them.  The stakes?  Just the future of the franchise.  It’s Vegas, after all…who’d expect anything less?

The latest news here is that Pete Carroll will indeed be named the new Raiders coach. At age 73, the team understands the need to give Pete a more mature assistant, with most pundits naming Joe Biden as the obvious choice.

In Vegas, the city founded on odds making, the sure bet is that the Raiders will continue to live on the fumes of past glory, which are almost totally dissipated. The problem lies with ownership, not with the GM or coach of the moment. Sad to say, but the Raiders have all the vigor of an expansion franchise.
