On The Couch: May 10

Good Morning!

It is real bad that NASCAR drivers are being suspended after a “stricter” drug policy was set in place this season.

So far the tally for suspensions are one driver and three crew men.

The driver suspended indefinitely (are you reading this NHL, NFL, MLB, and NBA) was Jeremy Mayfield.  Depending on the severity of the drug Mayfield tested for will depend on when he returns.

When he comes back there is already a precedent set for NASCAR to demand random drug tests.  It seems that NASCAR is more serious about drug testing than the major four sports.

Just for history sake, Kevin Grubb was suspended indefinitely in March 2004 for failing their substance abuse policy.  Grubb was then reinstated in June 2006.

Imagine Manny or A-Rod being suspended that long, you think the players would get the message.

Grubb than refused to take another random drug test in September 2006 and was promptly suspended again and never returned.

Sadly, Grubb committed suicide this week.

Maybe the major four need to not worry about the unions and start thinking about the image they convey.

Slap on the wrists just aren’t enough to stop players to get an edge.
