La Salle’s Riley Worley takes a look at a pitch

(East Los Angeles College) – La Salle won one and lost one Saturday at the Whittier Tournament at East LA College. In the opener the Lancers fell behind early and could never make it up. They broke open a close game with five runs in the third and fourth innings combined to get the win in the nightcap. Here’s how it went.

Knight scored two in the top of the first inning to grab the lead and it turned out that was all that was needed. The Hawks used two singles and a double to score twice.

La Salle cut the lead to one in the fourth inning when Kinsley Washington reached on an error and scored on a base hit by Lauren Gomez. Gomez was left a third.

Knight added another run in the fifth on a triple and a run scoring single.

Paula Damas pitched a complete game for La Salle. After a rocky start she allowed just one run through the next five innings (the game was called after six innings due to time).

Damas struck out five and did not walk a batter. She allowed five hits – only two after the first inning. The Lancers has six hits overall.

The Lancers pounded out seven hits and scored six times in just four innings to get the victory. The game was stopped after the top of the fifth.

Vanessa Dwyer worked all five frames for La Salle. She allowed five hits and walked five, while striking out one batter but managed to stay out of trouble limiting the Oilers to just two runs.

Evelyn Hernandez was in the circle for Montebello for the four innings. She fanned two and walked one.

La Salle scored first in the opening inning on a leadoff double by Beverly Valerio and an RBI single  by Damas. Montebello tied it in the third when Brianna Alvarez walked and worked her way around the bases on a stolen base, a wild pitch and an error.

The Lancers broke it open with three in the third. Valerio was hit by a pitch and Washington lined one down into the left field corner. Valerio scored and Washington motored into third with a slide for a triple. Lauren Gomez followed with a double to left to plate Washington and Alexi Zate’s double scored Gomez.

Montebello got one back in the top of the fourth when Mariah Ginez walked and scored after base knocks by Alvarez and Ariana Morales.

La Salle added some insurance with two in the bottom of the fourth. Washington delivered the big blow again with a two run double. Katherine Knop and Valerio both singled to set the table for Washington.

In the fifth, Hernandez doubled but Dwyer slammed the door by retiring the final three batters.

La Salle is now 6-1 on the season after the split
