(Pomona) – Defensive coaches always stress the importance of making an opposing offensive work for everything they get; to never to give up “The Big Play”. Friday night Pomona scored early and often on “big plays” in route to a 58-17 victory over Don Lugo.
The Red Devils’ speed was too much for the Conquistadores defense to handle. All night Pomona was able to break containment from Don Lugos D and have their skill position players, with superior speed, make a plays in open field.
Don Lugo scored first to go up 3-0 off a 12 yard field goal , with 5:09 left in the first quarter capitalizing on a muffed punt by Pomona. This would be the first and only time they would lead all night. The Red Devils went in at halftime up 27-10. Things got interesting to open the second half; Pomona fumbled the opening kickoff and Don Lugo recovered at the 30. They eventually scored to close within ten points, 27-17. Just when it appeared the Conquistadores were going to make a “game of it”, the Red Devils scored 34 unanswered points.
***All 17 points scored by the Conquistadores came off turnovers by the Red Devils.
***Pomona had scores of 85, 82, 40, and 38 yds.
***Pomona’s defense put points on the board off a 45 yd. pick six by Shawn Wilson with 5:28 left in the second.
