(West Covina)Kam Brown fired four touchdown passes and the Charger defense held the West Covina to one first down in a 33-21 win Friday night in West Covina.
The win puts the Chargers record at 5-4, 3-1 and at the top of the Hacienda League. The loss for West Covina puts them at 6-3, 3-1 and alone in second place in league. A loss next week for either team will put in question a place in the post season.
The Bulldogs did strike first on the night when sophomore Kevin Thomas found room up the middle and was off to the races for a 82-yard touchdown with 7:19 left in the first quarter.
Charter Oak came back later in the quarter to tie the game on a 24-yard screen pass from Brown to Zion Echols.
Early in the second period, Brown found Casteel again from 32-yards away to take a 14-7 lead.
West Covina knotted the score at 14 on a 78-yard bolt to paydirt by Thomas with 2:13 left to play in the first half.
With 10:49 left in the third period it was another big play for the Bulldgogs them on the scoreboard and the lead. Quiton Altos got lose on a punt and returned it 52-yards for the score putting West Covina up 21-14. It was their last lead of the night.
Charter Oak took control the rest of the way with touchdown passes of 18-yards, one to Dareon Nash and the other to Zion Echols and also added a 25-yard field goal by Jared Surdo.
Adding to the offensive woes for West Covina was allowing a safety when back up quarterback Isaiah Bravo threw the ball away to avoid the rush while in his own endzone.
*** Brown hit on 21 of 33 passes for 318-yards and the four scores for Charter Oak.
*** Casteel was Brown’s favorite target connecting on seven for 95-yards and a touchdown.
*** The Bulldogs only had two highlights on the night on the two long runs by Johnson.
*** The Charger defense although undersized, held West Covina to one lone first down that came in the third quarter.
*** It was a long night for West Covina starting quarterback Aaron McCorkle who was sacked six times.
*** After being out due to injury Echols was held in check rushing but still managed to score twice including the 18-yarder and a 24-yard screen pass.

*** It was a long night for the Bulldog offensive line that included LT Chris Koreen, LG Tyler Johnson, C Matt Jinright, RG Xavier Morales, and RG Eric Quevedo.
*** Charter Oak can lock up the Hacienda League title with a win next week on the road at Chino.
*** West Covina will need to beat Diamond Ranch on the road next week to lock up second place and assure themselves a spot in the Central Division playoffs.
