(Montebello) – New head coach David Ramos has set his staff at Schurr and there some interesting names that have been brought aboard.

Former Spartan quarterback Aaron Cantu and receiver Carlos Arredondo, who once teamed up to be the most dangerous duo in the Almont, are now part of the Schurr coaching staff. Cantu is the quarterback coach while Arredondo will be the receivers coach. Cantu and Arredondo also played together at ELAC before going off to play college football. Cantu graduated from Southern Utah and Arredondo from Henderson State.

The rest of the staff fills out this way. Randy Sanchez is the defensive coordinator with Dan Cota as the DB coach and Ryan Castro as the D-Line coach.

On offense Ramos will be the OC and Phillip Dominguez will be the running backs coach. Joseph Olivas and Jay Ferro will be working with the O-line.

“I’m very excited about this staff. We have a lot of knowledge from older guys and raw excitement and energy from our young coaches,” Ramos said.

@Shurr; good luck , but you know right before season or before a game Shurr does talk trash and its is not good for the kids when they loose, all because of a few idiots claiming victory before the game begins

Not all of us talk trash. Unfortunately the handful are the ones that make the Schurr family look bad. The team is humble and working hard. Coaches have these young men focused and learning the game of football. The Team is working together and they believe in the new program. The direction that this program is going is all for the positive. To have alumni to Coach at Schurr is a big plus and they will help the new staff understand the tradition of spartan football. Good luck to all this coming season.

@ Shurr fans; great you have new kids helping the program, but why do you like to talk trash when your not elite anymore?, your not even the best in your league! all you do is talk smack about lesser opponents, please get better and then pride yourself, show with wins and great playoff run ,

@Schurr alum say your right……But do you really think Ramos is going to let 2 young never coached 1day of varsity football kids have any kind of say in calling the O? I really doubt he will! Again, all this qb has to learn is how to hand off to the right and left

Seen these two boys grow up to be men on the field. Very Proud of both of them as players, college graduates and now as coaches.

Being apart of the Schurr program when these boy’s played, I’m proud to see both these young men come back to their Alma Mater and help build the Spartan program. It was a honor to coach and see you boy’s play!
@ Carlos.. Let’s go to Yakis!
@ Cantu.. I still think you should’ve been a Lineman… cheap QB! lol

@dont forget – “Could not beat out a freshman”, oh, please. He didnt beat anyone out. We all knew it was simply a favor by the head coach for his buddy Henry Polanco. Yes a freshman started last year, but it was all hype.

Is he starting for Garfield High School this upcoming year? I dont think so. He is going to make a good back up QB. Our current QB is much better than you think. Looking forward to a good year for Schurr Football despite all you haters!

@duane b if it’s the back up from last year…..I stick by my statement! Also, saw them against arroyo a couple of Saturday’s back. it’s still early! Just hard to believe in a qb that couldn’t beat out a freshman. But they are not going to need a qb handing off the ball 45/50 times a game.

Don’t you need a qb to throw the ball? And the last time I saw ramos as a oc,he ran the ball 95% of the time! No qb plus Ramos calling the = a boring offense. Even with the new young coaches, there is no way Schurr throws more then 6 times a game.

From Duane B.: @dont forget, we spoke to a coach who has thrown against Schurr already and he said they have a qb that’s “not bad.” The coach we spoke to didn’t know the kid’s name but did say he was ok throwing the ball.

All our coaches have been solid and there is a lot of positive vibe about the football program. Sanchez has the kids fired up to be on defense and new coaches Cantu, Arrendando, and Sanchez are going to work wonders on the passing game. Offense and defense look like they are in year one of installation but there is a lot of energy on the field. Things are looking up on the hill. Good luck on the season and stop worrying about the new Spartan staff and focus your attention on the old one!

    Pac 5 Scout,

I hear you loud and clear, but if you get the right blend of old and young, then the young coaches could flourish and add a whole lot to the program. A lot of the successful head coaches out there now were once assistants in their early 20’s. I’ll give these two guys even more credit because they have their degrees and played at the collegiate level. They got to start some time.

Congrats to the offensive duo Cantu & Arredondo that gave us Spartans some memorable games. Two of the most hard working and respectful young men to come out of the program, who both proved to be determined by continuing their education and earning a full ride scholarship to their respective Universities. Thanks to the MVS for their continuous coverage of the local sport teams and our local are athletes. Proud to have you back

Loading up your staff with boys barely able to drink can be risky. Even though they are knowledgeable about the game their real life experience in mentoring young men is lacking. I have seen far to many programs go this route and end up with a load of drama.

Congrats to these two gentlemen on all of their accomplishments. I also hope their degree from Southern Utah and Henderson State will be worth more than an assistant’s stipend. Part of being a mentor is to give the players sound advise about their future, “what would I do different if I can do it all over again?,” could be a great start.
