I provided my analysis of the Alhambra-Montebello game on the blog thread below Tim Peterson’s story, for anyone who’s interested. So, I won’t belabor those points here.
The main idea is that the game might’ve had a different outcome if Alhambra had been able to convert on three scoring opportunities in the first half, when the Moors’ defense shut out the Oilers.

@ The Truth: You’re on the right track with your comments about the know-it-alls who apparently believe that they can coach a team to victory every time. By the way, many of us on the Alhambra High football staff work for free, as I do, or for a small stipend.

@ SG insider: Huh? You need to be a little more focused in your writing.
In response to one of your points, we expect to be in for a fight when we play Bell Gardens in two weeks. I think we’ll have a reasonable chance to beat the Lancers if we can reduce the unforced errors on offense.

@ Grand Plan: That’s a pretty bizarre scenario. I believe a more realistic one would be Mark Keppel folding its football program within a few years if the Aztecs don’t make discernable progress. And, yes, the expectations are lower there.
The San Gabriel Matadors have a direct pipeline to football talent that Alhambra High currently lacks. Have you heard of the Rosemead Rebels?
Predictions of the Matadors’ demise are premature, in my opinion. Coach Encinas and his staff have a shot at turning their program around.

@ Anonymous: The supposed complexity of Alhambra’s offensive scheme wasn’t the main problem against Montebello; holding onto the ball was. The Moors should have had a lead going into the second half, and perhaps then the Oilers wouldn’t have been able to “pound the rock” as much as they did later in the game.

    @Ron Vrooman,

Well said! I think Alhambra played a pretty good game in the first half. MHS all year has had to regroup in the second half. Most of our key players really do a good job at adjusting to their assignments. Keep your heads up! Your program is on the incline!

BG guy? Get a grip. You guys cannot say a word until you beat us or Schurr. Banking on the lower levels is all you got. We will see how good you’ve gotten since last year. I recall it was another blowout. We will see…

@ Oiler2016: You’ll never get any bombastic remarks from me, and I can guarantee that no one on the Alhambra coaching staff would ever make claims about upcoming games.
However, people out there in the general public can say anything they want. (And, they sometimes do.)
“Alhambra is garbage” is a simplistic and fatally flawed premise that probably comes from someone who lacks knowledge about our school and football program. We’re accomplishing some good things at AHS; I know that for a fact because I work there often as a substitute teacher.
I seriously doubt that any of our student-athletes will be transferring to Montebello High. Coach Gonzalez already has a huge roster, so I don’t think he needs any transfers from Alhambra.
And, yeah, we’d love to make the playoffs. We’ll keep working hard to get there.

Much respect LS they have come a long way from what they were back in the day to what they have accomplished. We at BG hope to have the same success and I think we will sooner rather than later. Our fight isn’t with LS it’s with Montebello and Shurr and mark my words we will win that fight. Shurr has nothing after this year so no excuses if you don’t have a decent run. Montebello is showing its on the decline. BG has a young team Jr’s and sophomores doing most of the work. So look out for BG for years to come.

La Serna football only able to put up 7 points against a 1-4 Santa Fe team is confusing. Either La Serna was missing pieces or Santa Fe picked up pieces. What happened if anyone knows. Please no more Beltran stories. He has been gone for 3 years.

Beltran left La Serna as a self running machine. We new his program would last a couple of years without him. La Serna’s success the last two years had nothing to to with Coach George. Margarito just left him a good program.

But now that Coach George has had his hands in the system for three years, he is destroying what Margarito built. It was bound to happen.

Beltran is building a new program at BGHS. He has a long way to go but that was expected after he took over a struggling program. In his second year, you can start seeing a few rays of light at the end of the tunnel. Its just a matter of time.

I’ll have more info about the Alhambra-Montebello game later on. I’m not avoiding anyone after a tough loss; I’m working two jobs, and I have to sleep sometime.
I’ll get back to you after I get home from working concessions at Dodger Stadium. I’ve already texted comprehensive stats and info about last night’s game to MVS.
The Moors actually outplayed Montebello for a long stretch of the first half, but they came away empty on three opportunities in the “red zone.” (A blocked field-goal try and two lost fumbles, one of which turned into a scoop-and-score for Montebello on the last play before halftime.)
AHS got back into the game with a TD early in the third quarter that cut Montebello’s lead to 9-6, but the Oilers pretty much dominated with their ground game after that.
I’ll see everyone later; enjoy your playoff baseball and college football today!

The BG win says more about SG program, wow! to think that these kids got destroyed even harder than past years and considering this is still a BG program that is not at full power like the past says a lot. My prediction after this week is BG wins by 2 maybe 3 TDS , by 2nd quartet we will see Alhambra revert to the same old , just a harsh observation, not trying to start anything , im an sg alumni just in case Alhambra people take my comment the wrong way and want to know what school I’m from

To those wondering why Bergstrom is being kept around so long, let me suggest that the district wants to lower Alhambra’s level of play to approximate that of San Gabriel, so that both schools can feel an equal sense of low expectations. I even hear they want to re-name the Alhambra group Matamoors.
