Bonita Blasts into Second Round

(Arcadia) -Bonita scored four runs in the first inning and six in the seventh in an 11-2 rout of Arcadia Wednesday in the first round of the CIF Division 1 Baseball playoffs.

Leading 5-2 heading into the seventh inning the Bearcats put it away with six runs in the top of the inning. Tyler Holley, Jared Brunk, Diego Vasquez and Colton Perez all had hits in the inning and Bryan Bradshaw and Garrett Patterson were hit by pitches. By the time the dust had settled a three-run game was 11-2 and it was all over except the celebration.

Bonita got off and running with four runs in the first inning. With one out Vasquez was hit by a pitch and Perez singled. Patterson reached on an error on a ground ball to short and Vasquez scored. Holley beat out an infield hit and another run scored and Brunk lined a double to left to plate two more. The Apaches had their ace, Ian Hoffstetter on the mound, but were suddenly in a 4-0 hole.

Justin Santiago pitched into the sixth inning to pick up the win for the Bearcats.

Arcadia got one back in the bottom of the first when Devin Eskridge walked and after a base hit by Fernando Palencia and a walk to Chris Garcia, scored when Brayden Herrera walked to force him in. The Apaches let a golden opportunity get away though leaving the bases loaded.

The score stayed 4-1 until the fifth inning as Hoffstetter and Bonita starter Justin Santiago settled in. The Bearcats did have a big chance in the fourth inning but they left the sacks full as Hofstetter got the last two outs of the inning.

Bonita extended the lead to four again in the fifth when Holley walked, Brunk and Andrew Sanchez singled and was forced in on a walk to Bradshaw. Palencia relieved Hofstetter with one out in the inning.

Ian Hoffstetter settled in for Arcadia after the first inning but the Apaches couldn’t get over the hump.

Arcadia cut it to 5-2 in the sixth as Leo Peniche singled and eventually came around to score on a walk to Garcia. But the Apaches again failed to take advantage as they left the bases loaded.

Then Bonita applied the dagger with the big seventh inning. Bonita had 13 hits overall. Brunk and Vasquez each had three hits for the Bearcats.

Arcadia had six hits to go along with the two runs.

Hoffstetter went four and one-third for the Apaches with Palencia and Gabriel Lopez finishing up.

Santiago went five and one-third innings to get the victory. Camden Farina and Patterson went the rest of the way.

Arcadia finishes the season with a Pacific League title and an overall record of 21-5. Bonita (19-4) moves on to the second round.
