El Monte Lands Ceniceros

Jesse Ceniceros steps down at Chino

Jesse Ceniceros is the new Head Coach at El Monte

By Tim Peterson

(El Monte) – Former Chino head coach Jesse Ceniceros has agreed to become the new head coach at El Monte Ceniceros confirmed Friday.

Ceniceros stepped down at Chino last week after two years at the helm. Prior to Chino he was the head coach at Norwalk. Ceniceros had an overall record of 13-10 at Chino and guided the Cowboys to the playoffs in both seasons.

Ceniceros takes over for Eric MacIntyre who resigned after just one year.

Ceniceros is known for running the double wing offense which he plans to continue at El Monte. Already in May, he will now quickly begin to assemble his staff and get his players ready for spring.

The hire may have surprised some people but the most surprised person of all may have been Ceniceros himself.

“If you would have told me last Friday that I would be the next coach at El Monte I would have said ‘your crazy,’ Ceniceros said. “I was planning on taking a year off to decide what I wanted to do. I didn’t resign at Chino to take the job at El Monte. I had no idea.”

Ceniceros said it started with a phone call from an area coach asking him if there were any openings on the Chino staff. “I told him ‘yeah the head coach job is open. I just resigned.”

That led to that coach putting Ceniceros in touch with the AD at El Monte and the eventual hire.

“They showed me around the campus and then we talked and they offered it to me. I was honored that they wanted me to be their head coach,” Ceniceros said. “It just felt right. I wasn’t aware of anything that had gone on at El Monte previously. Nothing. It was totally unexpected. But again it just felt right.”

The man is a winner! Pure and Simple…kids will run whatever offense and defense the coach implements as long as it wins. What has the spread brought El Monte the last whatever amount of years? 6-5? Has there been a better record than 6-5 and a 1st Round exit? I can’t speak for what he did at Chino but I believe the team he took over was 0-10 the prior year. Players that stay will reap the rewards at El Monte High School. Good luck to you coach!

Would you guys even had a coach? Would you even had a season? You all are not as smart as you want to make yourself seem, so stop and learn something for once

They played some great D last year at Chino. They only gave up 28 points a game, running an offense that minimizes possessions. To hold Northview (Midvalley School) to 38 in the first round of CIF says a lot. So much better than Burbank who runs that spread offense.

Who wants to be a skilled offensive player on a 3 yards and a cloud of dust team? I’m going to SM or Arroyo maybe ER. Don’t feel like bumping heads on every damn play. Maybe that is why Chino let him go. With all that talent over there to stubborn to get with the times. Still analog in a digital world.

It’s a great hire. Real football, not basketball on grass. He will actually coach defense too. No spread teams play D their D is to just get the ball back and score. No coach wants to play a double wing team, they physically hurt you even if you win.

This is a great/lucky hire for EM! As long as the hater Sanchez stays out of the way. The Double Wing is an old-old-school offense, but it is extremely difficult to prepare for! You don’t need Pennys’ to run this offense, you don’t need an huge OL, you just need undisciplined defenses to be successful. So the rest of the MVL’s Defenses better be prepared and play assignment football. I think this makes EM a contender for a playoff spot immediately. On another note, his quotes are much more professional than that joker who just got hired at Rosemead…

To all those second guessers: Check this guy’s record, the record of the team before he got there, his record while he was there, & the team’s record after he left. Check how many years he’s made playoffs. Check how many kids made it to next level, not just D1. As for the Penny’s, ya their great athletes that can do more than just run the ball, But If it’s all about Penny there’s a Penny still at Norwalk, how’s that working out? EM is lucky to land this guy.

And there it is. Guy hasn’t even started and out comes the snark. @FBallFan Ceniceros throws the ball 5 times a game. That’s what he does, if he has to do it more it’s because he’s getting boat raced. Rodgers had to go to a JC, Goff already had a pedigree and was well known prior to HS. As for the bloggers, you are going to win in a boring style. A lot of kids will not like it and won’t play, but the Double Wing does not need a roster of 40, it does fine with 28. As for Pop Warner Offense, that is exactly what it is. It also wins…a lot. Will the culture at EM be satisfied winning football games in games that are incredibly boring (they finish fast) or is he going to be let go like most Wing guys after a few years. SEM has tried to run out Gallardo, SD ran out Zernicow, obviously Norwalk and Chino moved on from Ceniceros. Lastly, will it win a lot in a league where Marshall runs it, Mt. View runs it (out of gun because they don’t know what they’re doing over there), SEM runs a Wing T with some Double Wing (Wing T is an off shoot of the Double Wing/very similar), now EM. It is very different to try and create a scout look when your base offense is pro style or spread and you see a Wing offense once or twice a year, but give it to me everyday in practice and now it becomes who has the better guys. Finally, one would wonder why Jude said no, Knight stepped away, and a man who has won many titles and has a CIF finals on his resume left Norwalk, Chino (in April a story for another day), and takes this dumpster fire in May. Got to Love EM Football. Joe T needs to write another book.

    Also you’re forgetting one something
Rosemead lost its identity they went to a spread throw it deep offense and it hasn’t panned out too well. 10 years ago if you played Rosemead it hurt!
South El Monte only becomes relevant when they get a stud. They have one now so they’re good. After graduation they’ll be waiting for the next big thing. Plus you gotta think Mike Mooney will be getting offers next year.
    Marshall well is Marshall
Gabrielino same thing as South, get a stud get relevant.
The league is open every year. El Monte will take advantage believe me.

    @not a fan
Let’s take into consideration a few points. This was the luckiest you guys have been in years. This guy fell on to your lap. Every EM fan should be thankful.
Secondly, you had a coach that was spread all day fun and gun throw 50 times a game never punt fudged stats and what did that get you guys ? 1 title since 79? Maybe change in your case is good.
Another point is people like yourself have led to a lot of these problems to much hovering to much entitlement. You’re already trying to assemble a coup before the dude has had one practice. Someone said it below.. buy a churro sit down and enjoy the show. The guy has won everywhere he’s been. Go take a look a Chino before he got there. You’re not Arroyo, Arroyo has a qb right now for two years but they already know who will take his place in 2 years. Go to Saturday Jets game and watch the kids on all levels play… Arroyo will get every stud athlete out there. That’s why they can the way they play. Bottom line change is good. This guy will make the lions relevant again. Enjoy the churro.

I’ve seen the double wing a few times and if there’s a kid with hands he will be used and get his numbers, and if the QB can throw they’ll throw. Maybe not 50/50 enough to keep teams somewhat on their toes for the pass. I believe Rodgers and goff both came out of wing offenses.

Richard Sherman was a dw running back and he went to Stanford as a WR. Penny was the best WR stat wise in 2013. Maybe there’s a poor mans penny or Sherman in El Monte somewhere. Never know.

Really? First off Shindlers and Fast grossed over $300 million dollars, adjusted for inflation Shindlers grossed more. Also at over 3 hours Shindlers gross is even more impressive because it had less showings. A more apt comparison would be some garbage foreign flick playin at the Laemelle in Santa Monica that all the critics love, but grosses like 800K and the director has to move around to every studio to get some funding. Eventually he finds out that his audience is quite small and his career fizzles out. Trying to compare the Double Wing to Spielberg…Funny!

The Double Wing is a Pop-Warner type football. Real football has evolved so far past the that style.
It’s a shame two non-football guys, the AD at El Monte and the new Head Coaches think it is football.
Ceniceros and the AD will drive away skilled players from El Monte and Ceniceros will fail again and in two or three you will him say, I want to spend more time with my family AGAIN. I feel bad for the boys at El Monte. El Monte people. Go to your AD demand a real coach, who know how to coach Pro set, Spread Offense. This way you can keep your QB, TE, WRs. Other wise, the only choice left is to become a gloried blocker for the RB. The only person with a chance for a football scholarship is the RB. If you haven’t figured this yet, I am not a fan of Ceniceros because I see him running from school to school chasing HIS DREAM for HIS OWN GLORY, on the back of young football players who want a ride to college playing football. THIS IS SELFISH OF CENICEROS AND SHORTED SIGHTED OF THE AD AT EL MONTE. GOD BLESS THE BOYS AT EL MONTE.

Was Ceniceros “desperate” when he took the Norwalk job? Chino wasn’t exactly the top of the heap either. One thing you can be sure of: this man will make winners out of the El Monte kids, and when all the dust settles, that’s the only thing that matters.

I think you need to go back and check the definition of mediocre @GT. He’ll bring a league title very soon. Hell he has a pretty good offensive line coming back this year that mauled defensive fronts last year. But the Offensive Coordinator last season kept trying to pass 50 times a game. This plays right into the strength of the team.

This guy must have been desperate. El Monte is an absolute disaster.

Not sure what all the fanfare is about. Ceniceros seems to have a mediocre to average record, couple of good seasons. Doesn’t seem like a bad coach. But I guess when, as “Vikings” wrote below, you are comparing him to other coaches in the valley, it could be a good thing.

People over estimate the transfer effect. No one transferred out of Concord De La Salle though they threw only 13 passes in their regular season. Why? Because…

Winning fixes everything. Don’t matter how it’s done. People want to win.

The simplicity of the double wing means you dnt need a penny to be successful, although it does make life more simpler. The bottom line is he has been relatively successful where ever he has went, he will beat teams he’s supposed to and win or be competitive in the bigger games

What’s the difference? That’s exactly the way it is now anyway. I mean this with as little disrespect as possible, but Arroyo wins because of the kids. Good staff but every year they’re restocked and ready for a run. That’s because kids that should be at other schools make the drive north to go to arroyo. Coaches do a good job of getting the most of the Jet kids as well. But enter a guy like Ceniceros who will take 3 rbs and get the 12-15 carries each a game. so if you’re a RB why would you want to play at Arroyo? For 5 carries a game? No, now those kids will stay at El Monte.

Ciniceros is a no-nonsense guy who understands that football is fundamentally about blocking and tackling, and that a very physical approach to the game, such as the double wing represents, can work beautifully at the High School level. Since very few skill guys will ever make the next level, I couldn’t care less that their playing time will be diminished under Jesse’s leadership. The point is to WIN, and under Jesse’s system, the kids who try harder will be rewarded. This is a great hire.
