(La Mirada) – La Mirada has hired Lucas Mealy as its new head football coach the school announced Friday.
Mealy was the offensive coordinator last year for Orange High School where he also coached track and field. He also worked previously as an assistant at St. John Bosco.
Mealy takes over for Mike Moschetti who resigned in March take the head coaching job at St. Paul.
The Matadores, who won a CIF Southeast Division title under Moschetti in 2015, finished 4-6 last year (2-3 in the Gateway League) and missed the playoffs.
Orange went 11-3 last season advancing to the CIF Division 6 championship game before losing to San Jacinto 42-15.
I’m hearing that this guy didn’t have a coaching staff when he got hired and still doesn’t. They have started practice and it is only him and one of his friends out there. If this doesn’t get solved quickly, the LM parents are gonna have a field day with the AD and the school about it.
Mmmmmmmm never heard of him.
First time head coach with a brutal schedule, brutal league, and currently no on campus game or practice field = sounds like this may take some time. I hope he has some coaches and Transfers to join him or else this could be ugly before it gets pretty.
Playing a D1 type schedule got his team beat up but it got Mochetti noticed by St. Paul alums. Mealy hopefully will return to a more modest schedule. He needs to. Starting this late into the season, hiring a staff and implementing his style will take time and a lot of practice. I’am guessing the Matadores 2023 dance card is not filled.
While the logical choice was Chris Williams, Mealy’s resume seems solid. If he can reawaken the ghosts of La Mirada the way sorcerer Moschetti is doing over on Greenleaf, the Mats will be fine.
Well having coached against this Orange staff for several years , they had some amazing players , but they were clearly on the recruiting / promoting end of the coaching spectrum…:this coach is up against it in current league format needing to beat either Downey or Warren for automatic bid .
Kobe Boykin et Al have already announced their transfer destinations , can’t see anyone of the Orange defectors ending up in La Mirada
Best of luck
