Can San Marino get off the floor against Schurr?

Diamond Bar (1-1) at Covina (1-1) – Covina District Field 

The Colts got well last week with a win over Pioneer while the Brahmas picked up their first win of the year by beating Walnut. Both teams were happy to get in the win column but let’s face it, Pioneer and Walnut aren’t exactly Alabama and Stanford. Should be a good match up here. Both teams are anxious to get a victory that might send them on their way to success. It could come down to a big play in the fourth quarter. The Colts get it done.

Arcadia (1-0) at Monrovia (0-2)

This looked like a good game a couple of weeks ago with a slight edge to the Wildcats. Today it’s a different story. Monrovia hasn’t scored a point offensively while the Apaches racked up 51 in Zero Week against Bell Gardens. Wildcat quarterback Richie Schroeder is still down with an injury adding to the M-Town woes. It’s going to be difficult for Monrovia to keep up with Arcadia. when faced with similar athletes last week at La Salle, the Cats fell 37-0. Arcadia might not just win, they could win going away. Apaches by two -three touchdowns.

Ayala (1-1) at Diamond Ranch (1-1) 

Another good non-league contest here. The two teams have a lot in common. Both are 1-1 and both have lost to Chino Hills-Ayala 19-7 in Zero Week and D-Ranch 20-13 a week ago. Ayala’s offense broke out with 38 points last week in a win over Alta Loma so it looks like the Bulldogs can put points on the board. The Panthers meanwhile have just 27 points in two games. Their defense has been stout though. If they can hold the Bulldogs down to a couple of scores, the offense should be able to do enough.

Burbank (1-1) at Downey (1-1)

This game will be a good test for both teams as they have similar records and styles. In 2016 both teams are physical and run first and feature solid running backs. Darnell Williams and Nicolas Warren get it done for the Bulldogs and Emari Demarcado is lightning for the Vikings. The defenses are fairly equal giving up 17 (Burbank) and 20.5 (Downey) per game. With the two teams so similar where will the difference be? Downey has home field advantage.

Bonita (1-1) at South Pasadena (2-0)

The Tigers are off to a good start in 2016. A solid win over a physical Rosemead team and a win on the road at Santa Clarita Christian. On the other side Ibis Aguilar’s squad struggled against San Dimas and came back with a win over Santa Fe. This will be the biggest test so far for both teams. A win for either side will do a lot to build confidence and momentum.

San Marino (0-2) at Schurr (2-0)

What a difference a year has made for San Marino. 15-1 and a trip to the State Bowl in 2015 to an 0-2 start in 2016. On the other side Schurr is 2-0 although not against the stiffest of competition. That being said winning builds confidence and doubt can set it when you’re not. The Spartans are still stinging after last year’s 63-0 loss and may be catching San Marino at a good time and no matter what San Marino’s record is, you know they will be well coached. On paper a Schurr will will still be an upset.

Temple City (0-2) vs. Alhambra (0-2) at Moor Field
The Moors are in the fifth season of a rebuilding project that has produced (counting this year) a 13-29 record. If every week could include the Rams the restorations would be complete as Alham has won 9 of its last 12 with TC. These are two teams playing for now because there is no tomorrow…not in 2016

Charter Oak (2-0) vs. Glendora (1-1) at Citrus College
The Chargers have won the last two meetings after dropping the two before that…and winning the two before that. They should make it three in a row Friday night over the Tartans. They’ve got the size, the bad dudes, and Bret Clemetson who has already thrown 10 touchdown passes. G-Town has size and a quality back in James Nolan they need to use them to limit CO’s touches to have a shot.

South El Monte (2-0) at Walnut (0-2)
So far, so good for the Southmen. They’re hammering opponents and pounding the ball. It’s a simple formula that might not take them to a CIF crown but, if well executed, it puts them deep into the MVL discussion. If quarterback Daniel Olmos is throwing 10 passes or less it means all is right with the world. If more…well…it means the 0-2 Mustangs are closing in on a W. That shouldn’t happen.
